Package Contents
- Kato Sound Box Unit (Model 22-102)
- Power Pack Connection Cable (Jump Cord)
- Instruction Manual (this document)
- Note: Sound cards are sold separately and are required for sound functionality.
Setup
Follow these steps to set up your Kato Sound Box:
- Connect to Power Pack: Use the included jump cord to connect the Sound Box to your existing analog power pack. Ensure a secure connection.
- Insert Sound Card: Locate the sound card slot on the Sound Box. Gently insert a compatible Kato sound card (sold separately) into the slot until it clicks into place.
- Connect to Track: Connect your power pack's feeder wires to your model railroad track as usual. The Sound Box integrates between the power pack and the track.
- External Speaker/Microphone (Optional):
- For enhanced sound output, connect an external speaker to the "LINE OUT" jack on the front of the Sound Box.
- To broadcast your voice or external audio, connect a microphone or audio device to the "MIC" jack.

Figure 2: Simple Connection Diagram. This diagram illustrates the straightforward connection process of the Kato Sound Box. It highlights that no special modifications are required for your existing model vehicles, and the system is designed for analog operation. The Sound Box connects between your power pack and the track via a jump cord and feeder lines.

Figure 3: Sound Box Features and Connections. This image provides a detailed overview of the Sound Box's components. It shows the sound card insertion slot, the integrated speaker, various control knobs (START, SYNC, VOLUME, MIC), and the MIC and LINE OUT jacks for external audio connections. The diagram also indicates how the Sound Box integrates with a power pack and track.
Operating Instructions
Once the Sound Box is set up, you can begin operating your model railroad with sound:
- Power On: Turn on your analog power pack. The Sound Box will power on automatically.
- Select Sound Card: Ensure the correct sound card for your locomotive type is inserted.
- Start Sound: Press the "START" button to initiate the engine sound.
- Control Volume: Adjust the "VOLUME" knob to your desired sound level. The "MIC" knob controls the volume of the microphone input.
- Synchronize Sound (SYNC): The "SYNC" knob allows you to fine-tune the synchronization between the locomotive's speed and the sound effects. Adjust this to match the sound to your train's acceleration and deceleration.
- Function Buttons (1-6): Use the numbered buttons (1-6) to trigger various sound functions specific to your inserted sound card, such as horn, bell, brake, or other special effects. Refer to your sound card's specific instructions for button assignments.
- Eject Sound Card: To remove a sound card, press the "EJECT" button.
Understanding Sound Card Types
Kato Sound Cards come in two main types, each offering a distinct operational experience:
- Controller Sync Type (e.g., Steam Locomotives):
With this type, the sound effects, such as the chuffing of a steam engine, are synchronized with the load on the motor. As the motor's load increases (e.g., on an incline or during acceleration), the chuffing sound will slow down, providing a realistic sense of effort from the locomotive.
- Sound Sync Type (e.g., Electric Multiple Units - EMUs):
This type synchronizes the motor sound with the actual acceleration and deceleration of the model. The sound will dynamically change to reflect the train's speed, offering a smooth and responsive audio experience.

Figure 4: Sound Card Synchronization Types. This image explains the two primary types of sound cards: Controller Sync Type, which adjusts sound based on motor load (e.g., steam engine chuffing slowing on an incline), and Sound Sync Type, which synchronizes sound directly with the model's acceleration and deceleration (e.g., EMU motor sounds changing with speed).
Maintenance
The Kato Sound Box is designed for durability and requires minimal maintenance. To ensure optimal performance and longevity:
- Keep the unit clean and free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
- Avoid exposing the unit to excessive moisture or extreme temperatures.
- Store the Sound Box and sound cards in a dry, safe place when not in use.
- Do not attempt to open the casing or perform internal repairs, as this may void any warranty.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Kato Sound Box, consider the following:
- No Sound:
- Ensure a sound card is correctly inserted and fully seated.
- Check all connections to the power pack and track.
- Verify the volume knob is turned up.
- Confirm the power pack is on and supplying power to the track.
- Distorted Sound:
- Adjust the volume level.
- If using an external speaker, check its connections and settings.
- Sound Not Synchronizing:
- Adjust the "SYNC" knob to fine-tune the synchronization.
- Ensure the sound card type matches your locomotive's characteristics (e.g., steam vs. EMU).
- Unit Not Powering On:
- Check the connection to the power pack.
- Ensure the power pack is functioning correctly.
