1. Introduction and Overview

The Yamaha CP88 is an 88-key graded hammer action stage piano designed for discerning pianists and gigging keyboardists. It combines over a century of piano craftsmanship with decades of synthesizer innovation to deliver authentic acoustic and electric piano sounds, realistic piano touch, and a highly intuitive user interface. Its triple sensor, natural wood keys provide grand piano weight and response, while synthetic ebony and ivory key tops ensure tactile grip during extended playing sessions.

2. What's in the Box

Please ensure all the following items are present in the packaging:

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Placement

  1. Carefully remove the CP88 from its packaging. Retain all packing materials for future transport or storage.
  2. Place the CP88 on a stable, flat surface or a compatible keyboard stand. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit.

3.2 Power Connection

  1. Connect the supplied AC adapter to the DC IN jack on the rear panel of the CP88.
  2. Plug the AC adapter into a suitable wall outlet.

3.3 Connecting Peripherals

The CP88 offers various connectivity options for audio output and control:

  • Audio Output: Use the balanced XLR or unbalanced 1/4" (6.35mm) stereo outputs to connect to an amplifier, mixer, or audio interface.
  • Sustain Pedal: Connect the FC3A Sustain Pedal to the SUSTAIN jack. This pedal supports half-damper functionality.
  • Headphones: For private practice, connect headphones to the 3.5mm jack.
  • USB Audio/MIDI: Connect a USB cable from the CP88's USB TO HOST port to your computer for audio recording/playback and MIDI control.
  • AUX Input: Use the dual 1/4" AUX line inputs to connect external audio sources like a second keyboard or mobile device.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Power On/Off

  1. To power on, press the POWER switch located on the rear panel. The display will illuminate.
  2. To power off, press and hold the POWER switch until the unit shuts down.

4.2 Sound Selection and Layers

The CP88 features three distinct sound sections: Piano, E. Piano, and Sub. Each section has dedicated controls for quick sound selection and parameter adjustment.

  • Piano Section: Access three premium grand pianos (Yamaha CFX, Yamaha S700, Bösendorfer Imperial), two upright pianos, and a variety of other acoustic piano sounds.
  • E. Piano Section: Choose from five classic electric pianos, including Rhodes and Wurli sounds, with authentic emulations.
  • Sub Section: Features strings, choruses, organ sounds, bass patches, vibes, and other mallet and synth sounds.
  • Layering Sounds: Activate multiple sections simultaneously to create rich, layered sounds. Adjust individual section volumes using their dedicated knobs.

4.3 Effects and Customization

The CP88 provides extensive control over effects and sound parameters:

  • Master Effects: Utilize dedicated controls for master delay, reverb, and EQ effects to shape your overall sound.
  • Seamless Sound Switching (SSS): Change sounds while holding notes without any sound cutoff, ensuring smooth transitions during live performance.
  • Custom Programs: Program and save your own custom sound settings, including layered sounds and effect configurations, for instant recall.
  • Touch Response: Adjust the keyboard's touch response and sensitivity to match your playing style and preference.

5. Maintenance

Proper care will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Yamaha CP88:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the surface of the instrument with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth and then wipe dry. Avoid abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents.
  • Key Cleaning: Clean the keys with a soft cloth dampened with water and a mild soap solution. Wipe thoroughly with a dry cloth immediately after.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the CP88 in a dust-free environment, ideally covered with a dust cover. Avoid extreme temperatures or humidity.
  • Transportation: When transporting the unit, use a dedicated soft case or hard case to protect it from impacts and scratches.

6. Troubleshooting
