1. Important Safety Information

Always read and understand all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations, and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury.

• Work Area Safety: Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.

2. Components of Your Impact Driver Kit

Your BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX Impact Driver Kit includes the following items:

• BDCI20C Impact Driver
• 20V MAX Lithium-Ion Battery (1.5Ah)
• Battery Charger
• Screwdriving Bit
• Extra 1.5Ah Lithium Battery (as per kit variant)

3. Setup and Charging

3.1 Charging the Battery

Before first use, fully charge the battery. The battery is not fully charged out of the box.

1. Connect the charger to a standard electrical outlet.
2. Slide the battery pack onto the charger. Ensure it is seated firmly.
3. The charging indicator light on the charger will illuminate, indicating the battery is charging.
4. Once fully charged, the indicator light may change color or turn off, depending on the charger model. Refer to your charger's specific instructions for details.
5. Disconnect the battery from the charger once charging is complete.

Note: For optimal battery life, avoid storing the battery in a discharged state. Recharge as soon as possible after use.

3.2 Installing/Removing the Battery

• To Install: Align the battery pack with the base of the impact driver and slide it in until it clicks securely into place.
• To Remove: Press the battery release button (usually located on the front or sides of the battery pack) and slide the battery out of the tool.

3.3 Installing/Removing Screwdriving Bits

The impact driver features a quick-release 1/4" hex chuck for easy bit changes.

1. To Install: Pull the chuck collar forward and insert the 1/4" hex shank bit fully into the chuck. Release the collar to lock the bit in place. Tug on the bit to ensure it is securely fastened.
2. To Remove: Pull the chuck collar forward and pull the bit straight out.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Powering On/Off and Variable Speed

• To Turn On: Squeeze the trigger switch. The tool will start.
• To Turn Off: Release the trigger switch.
• Variable Speed: The tool features variable speed. The further the trigger is depressed, the higher the speed. This allows for precise control during operation.

4.2 Forward/Reverse Control

A forward/reverse button is located above the trigger to change the direction of rotation.

• Forward (Driving): Push the button to the left (when viewed from the rear of the tool) for clockwise rotation.
• Reverse (Removing): Push the button to the right for counter-clockwise rotation.
• Lock-Off: When the button is in the center position, the trigger is locked, preventing accidental startup. Always engage the lock-off when not in use or when changing bits.

4.3 Using the Impact Driver

The impact driver is designed for driving fasteners quickly and efficiently, especially in tough materials or with long screws.

1. Select the appropriate bit for your fastener.
2. Ensure the battery is fully charged and securely installed.
3. Set the forward/reverse control to the desired direction (forward for driving).
4. Position the bit onto the fastener head.
5. Squeeze the trigger to start the tool. Apply firm, steady pressure to keep the bit engaged with the fastener. The impact mechanism will engage automatically when resistance is met, providing additional torque.
6. Release the trigger when the fastener is driven to the desired depth.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your tool.

• Cleaning: Keep the tool's ventilation slots clean to prevent overheating. Use a soft brush or dry cloth to remove dust and debris. Do not use water or chemical cleaners.
• Chuck Maintenance: Periodically clean the chuck to ensure smooth bit insertion and removal.
• Battery Care: Store batteries in a cool, dry place. Do not store in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. Recharge batteries before long periods of storage.
• Inspection: Regularly inspect the tool for any damaged parts, loose screws, or worn components. Do not operate a damaged tool. Contact BLACK+DECKER service for repairs.
