Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when working with power tools. Before performing any maintenance or installation:

  • Ensure the chainsaw engine is turned off and cooled down.
  • Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and eye protection.
  • Refer to your chainsaw's original manufacturer manual for specific safety guidelines and procedures.

Installation Instructions

Air Filter Installation

  1. Access the Air Filter Housing: Locate the air filter cover on your Stihl chainsaw. This is typically secured by a latch or screws. Open or remove the cover to expose the old air filter.
  2. Remove the Old Air Filter: Carefully pull out the old, dirty air filter. Note its orientation for correct installation of the new filter.
  3. Clean the Housing: Inspect the air filter housing for any debris, sawdust, or dirt. Clean the area thoroughly to prevent contaminants from entering the engine.
  4. Install the New Air Filter: Take one of the new Powtol air filters. Align it correctly with the housing and gently push it into place until it clips securely. The filter should fit snugly without requiring excessive force or trimming.
  5. Secure the Cover: Replace the air filter cover and ensure it is properly latched or screwed back into position.

Spark Plug Installation

  1. Locate the Spark Plug: The spark plug is typically found on the top or side of the engine cylinder.
  2. Remove the Spark Plug Cap: Carefully pull off the spark plug cap.
  3. Remove the Old Spark Plug: Use a spark plug wrench to loosen and remove the old spark plug. Turn counter-clockwise.
  4. Inspect the New Spark Plug: Ensure the new spark plug's gap is correctly set according to your chainsaw's specifications (refer to your chainsaw manual).
  5. Install the New Spark Plug: Thread the new spark plug into the cylinder by hand to avoid cross-threading. Once finger-tight, use the spark plug wrench to tighten it an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Do not overtighten.
  6. Replace the Spark Plug Cap: Push the spark plug cap firmly back onto the new spark plug.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance of your air filter and spark plug is crucial for the performance and lifespan of your chainsaw.

  • Air Filter: Inspect the air filter regularly, especially after heavy use or in dusty conditions. Replace the air filter when it appears dirty or clogged to maintain optimal engine airflow and prevent damage. The kit provides two filters for extended use.
  • Spark Plug: Inspect the spark plug periodically for wear, carbon buildup, or damage. Replace the spark plug as part of routine engine tune-ups or if you notice starting difficulties or reduced engine performance.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues after replacing your air filter or spark plug, consider the following:

  • Engine Not Starting:
    • Ensure the spark plug wire is securely attached.
    • Verify the spark plug gap is correct.
    • Check for proper fuel mixture and supply.
  • Reduced Engine Power or Rough Running:
    • Confirm the air filter is clean and properly seated.
    • Inspect the spark plug for fouling or damage.
    • Ensure the air filter cover is fully closed and sealed.
  • Filter Does Not Fit:
    • Double-check your chainsaw model against the compatibility list.
    • Ensure the filter is oriented correctly within the housing.

If problems persist, consult a qualified service technician or your chainsaw's original manual.
