4.2 Installation Steps

  1. Prepare the Sink Opening: Remove any existing drain assembly from the sink. Clean the sink opening thoroughly.
  2. Install Sink Flange: Apply plumber's putty around the underside of the sink flange. Insert the flange into the sink opening from above.
  3. Assemble Mounting Ring: From below the sink, slide the fiber gasket, backup flange, and mounting ring onto the sink flange. Secure with the snap ring and tighten the mounting screws evenly until the flange is firmly seated.
  4. Connect Disposer to Mounting Ring: Align the disposer's discharge outlet with the drain pipe. Lift the disposer and align the three mounting tabs on the disposer with the corresponding slots on the mounting ring. Twist the disposer until it locks into place.
  5. Attach Drain Pipe: Connect the disposer's discharge outlet to the drain pipe assembly using the provided gasket and bolts. Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free.
  6. Dishwasher Connection (Optional): If connecting a dishwasher, remove the dishwasher inlet plug from the disposer's inlet port using a screwdriver or punch. Connect the dishwasher drain hose to this port.
  7. Install Air Switch: Drill a hole in the countertop or sink for the air switch button. Insert the button and connect the air tubing from the button to the air switch port on the disposer.
  8. Electrical Connection: Plug the disposer into a grounded electrical outlet.

  3. Feed Food Waste: Slowly feed food waste into the sink opening. Do not overload the disposer.
  4. Continue Grinding: Allow the disposer to run until all food waste is processed and only the sound of running water and the motor is heard.
  5. Turn Off Disposer: Press the air switch button again to turn off the disposer.
  6. Flush Drain: Continue running cold water for approximately 15 seconds after turning off the disposer to ensure all particles are flushed down the drain.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and efficient operation of your Bort TITAN 4000 Waste Disposer.

  • Regular Cleaning: To clean the grinding chamber and remove odors, grind small amounts of citrus peels (lemon, orange, lime) with cold water. This helps to scrub the chamber and leave a fresh scent.
  • Avoid Grease Buildup: Do not pour grease or oil down the drain. Allow grease to solidify and dispose of it in the trash. For small amounts, flush with hot water and detergent.
  • Deep Cleaning: For a more thorough cleaning, you can use specialized disposer cleaning products following their instructions.

7. Troubleshooting

Refer to this section for solutions to common issues you might encounter with your waste disposer.

7.1 Disposer Does Not Start

  • Check Power: Ensure the disposer is properly plugged into a working electrical outlet.
  • Reset Button: Locate the red reset button on the bottom of the disposer unit (Image 7.1). Press it firmly. If it trips repeatedly, there may be an internal issue requiring professional service.
  • Air Switch: Verify that the air switch tubing is securely connected to both the button and the disposer.

7.2 Disposer Hums But Does Not Grind

  • Jammed Grinding Plate: An object may be lodged between the grinding plate and the grinding ring.
  • Solution: Turn off the disposer and disconnect power. Use tongs or pliers to carefully remove the object. Never use your hands. If the object cannot be removed, use a wooden spoon handle to try and dislodge the grinding plate by rotating it back and forth.

7.3 Leaks

  • Loose Connections: Check all plumbing connections (sink flange, drain pipe, dishwasher connection) for tightness. Tighten any loose bolts or nuts.
  • Damaged Gaskets: Inspect gaskets for proper seating and any signs of damage. Replace if necessary.

7.4 Unpleasant Odors

  • Food Buildup: Odors usually indicate food particles trapped in the grinding chamber or drain.
  • Solution: Follow the regular cleaning procedure described in Section 6. Ensure all food waste is thoroughly flushed after each use.
