3. Product Overview
Familiarize yourself with the physical components of your Tolino Shine 3.
3.1 Front View

The front of the device features the 6-inch E Ink Carta touchscreen display, which provides a paper-like reading experience. The display resolution is 1072 x 1448 pixels. The Tolino logo is located at the bottom center.

The back of the device has a textured surface designed for comfortable handling and grip. The Tolino logo is subtly embossed in the center.
3.3 Bottom View (Ports and Controls)

On the bottom edge, you will find the Micro-USB port, used for charging the device and connecting it to a computer for data transfer. The power button is also located on this edge, typically next to the charging port.
4. Setup
4.1 Initial Charging
Before first use, fully charge your Tolino Shine 3. Connect the supplied Micro-USB cable to the device's Micro-USB port and the other end to a USB power adapter (not included) or a computer's USB port. The charging indicator light will show the charging status.
4.2 Powering On/Off
- To Power On: Press and hold the power button (located on the bottom edge) for a few seconds until the screen activates.
- To Power Off: Press and hold the power button until a menu appears, then select 'Power Off'. A short press will put the device into sleep mode.
4.3 Initial Configuration
Upon first power-on, the device will guide you through an initial setup process. This typically includes:
- Language Selection: Choose your preferred language for the device interface.
- Wi-Fi Connection: Connect to a wireless network to access online features, download books, and receive updates. Select your network from the list and enter the password.
- Registration: You may be prompted to register your device with a Tolino partner bookstore. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete this step. Registration is often necessary to access cloud services and purchase content directly from the device.
5. Operating the Device
5.1 Navigation
The Tolino Shine 3 features a responsive touchscreen for navigation. Use the following gestures:
- Tap: To select an item, open a book, or activate a menu option.
- Swipe: To turn pages in a book, scroll through lists, or navigate between home screen panels.
- Pinch-to-Zoom: In some contexts, this gesture may be used to adjust text size or zoom into images.
5.2 Reading Books
To open a book, tap its cover on the home screen or in your library. While reading:
- Turning Pages: Tap the left or right side of the screen, or swipe left/right.
- Accessing Reading Menu: Tap the center of the screen to bring up options for font size, line spacing, brightness, and other settings.
- SmartLight: The integrated SmartLight feature automatically adjusts the color temperature of the front light from cool white to warm white, adapting to the time of day for comfortable reading. This can also be adjusted manually in the reading menu.
5.3 Managing Your Library
Books can be stored on the device's internal 8 GB memory. You can organize your library by creating collections or using search and filter functions.
5.4 Transferring Books
- Via Wi-Fi (Tolino Cloud): If registered, you can download purchased books directly from your Tolino cloud library.
- Via Computer (Micro-USB): Connect your Tolino Shine 3 to a computer using the Micro-USB cable. The device will appear as a removable drive. You can then drag and drop compatible eBook files (e.g., EPUB, PDF, TXT) into the device's 'Books' folder.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
- Screen: Use a soft, lint-free cloth, slightly dampened with water or a screen cleaner, to gently wipe the E Ink display. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Body: Wipe the device body with a soft, dry cloth.
6.2 Battery Care
- To prolong battery life, avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures.
- Charge the device regularly, but it is not necessary to fully discharge it before recharging.
7. Troubleshooting
7.1 Device Unresponsive
If the device becomes unresponsive, try a soft reset. Press and hold the power button for approximately 10-15 seconds until the device restarts.
7.2 Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues
- Ensure your Wi-Fi network is active and within range.
- Verify that you have entered the correct Wi-Fi password.
- Try restarting your Wi-Fi router.
- On the Tolino Shine 3, turn Wi-Fi off and then on again in the settings.
7.3 Books Not Appearing
- Ensure the book files are in a compatible format (EPUB, PDF, TXT).
- If transferred via USB, verify the files were placed in the correct folder (e.g., 'Books').
- If downloaded from the cloud, check your internet connection and library synchronization.
