The Cobra PX500 radios are equipped with features designed for professional use:

Setup

1. Battery Installation and Charging

Before initial use, ensure the rechargeable Li-Polymer battery is properly installed and fully charged.

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the radio.
  2. Insert the Li-Polymer battery, ensuring the contacts align correctly.
  3. Replace the battery compartment cover.
  4. Place the radio(s) into the dual drop-in charging station.
  5. Connect the Micro-USB charging cable to the charging station and the USB wall adapter.
  6. Plug the USB wall adapter into a standard electrical outlet. The charging indicator light on the station will illuminate.
  7. Allow approximately 4.5 hours for a full charge.

2. Powering On/Off

To power on or off the radio, rotate the dedicated Power & Volume Knob located at the top of the unit clockwise to turn on, and counter-clockwise until it clicks to turn off.

3. Attaching the Belt Clip

Slide the belt clip onto the designated slot on the back of the radio until it locks into place. The 360° swivel feature allows for comfortable positioning.

Operating Instructions

1. Selecting a Channel

Use the Up/Down arrow buttons on the front of the radio to select one of the 22 available channels. Ensure all radios intended for communication are set to the same channel.

2. Using Privacy Codes (CTCSS/DCS)

The PX500 radios utilize 121 privacy codes (38 CTCSS codes and 83 DCS codes) to minimize interference from other users on the same channel. To set a privacy code:

  1. Press the MODE button until the privacy code icon (CTCSS or DCS) flashes on the LCD display.
  2. Use the Up/Down arrow buttons to select your desired privacy code.
  3. Press the MODE button again to confirm and exit.

For successful communication, all radios in your group must be set to the same channel and privacy code.

3. Transmitting and Receiving

  • To Transmit: Press and hold the Push-to-Talk (PTT) button on the side of the radio. Speak clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT button to listen.
  • To Receive: Ensure the PTT button is not pressed. The radio will automatically receive transmissions on the selected channel and privacy code.

4. VOX (Voice-Activated Transmission)

VOX allows for hands-free communication. When activated, the radio transmits automatically when it detects your voice.

  1. Press the MODE button repeatedly until the VOX icon flashes on the LCD display.
  2. Use the Up/Down arrow buttons to select a VOX sensitivity level (1-5, with 5 being most sensitive).
  3. Press the MODE button to confirm and exit.

5. Call Alert

Press the CALL button to send an audible call alert tone to other radios on the same channel and privacy code.

Maintenance

Battery Care

To maximize battery life and performance:

  • Fully charge batteries before first use.
  • Avoid overcharging; remove radios from the charger once fully charged if not needed for extended periods.
  • Store radios and batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • If the radio will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery.

Cleaning

Clean the radio's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the charging contacts on both the radio and the charging station are clean and free of debris.

Water Resistance

The PX500 has an IPX2 rating, meaning it is protected against dripping water when tilted up to 15 degrees. It is not designed to be submerged in water. Avoid exposing the radio to heavy rain or direct water spray.

Troubleshooting
