Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Tele-Science 30662 375 Power 50mm Terrestrial Astronomical Telescope. This versatile instrument is designed for both astronomical observation of celestial bodies and terrestrial viewing of distant objects on Earth. With its 375x magnification and 50mm objective lens, it provides clear and detailed images. This package includes an enhanced authorized version of the "Star Walk 2" smartphone application to assist you in exploring the night sky.
Safety Information
- Never look directly at the sun through the telescope or its finder scope. Permanent and irreversible eye damage, including blindness, can result.
- Do not use the telescope in direct sunlight without proper solar filters.
- Handle optical components with care to avoid scratches or damage.
- Keep the telescope and its accessories away from small children to prevent choking hazards from small parts.
- Store the telescope in a dry, dust-free environment when not in use.
Package Contents
Please verify that all items listed below are present in your package:
- Telescope Optical Tube (Aluminum body)
- Adjustable Aluminum Tripod
- Eyepieces (various magnifications, including Barlow lens)
- Diagonal Mirror (for comfortable viewing)
- Finder Scope (for locating objects)
- Stylish Carrying Case
- Instruction Manual (this document)
- Star Walk 2 Smartphone Application License (details inside package)
Setup and Assembly
Follow these steps to assemble your telescope:
- Set up the Tripod: Unfold the legs of the aluminum tripod and extend them to your desired height. Ensure the tripod is stable on a flat surface.
- Attach the Telescope Tube: Locate the mounting screw on the tripod head. Align the telescope tube's mounting bracket with the screw hole on the tripod head and securely fasten it.
- Install the Diagonal Mirror: Insert the diagonal mirror into the focuser tube at the back of the telescope. Tighten the small thumbscrew on the focuser to hold it in place.
- Insert an Eyepiece: Choose an eyepiece (e.g., the one with the highest focal length for lowest magnification, which is easier for initial setup) and insert it into the diagonal mirror. Secure it with the thumbscrew.
- Attach the Finder Scope: Mount the finder scope onto its bracket on the main telescope tube. Align the finder scope with the main telescope by looking through both at a distant object during daylight. Adjust the finder scope's alignment screws until the object is centered in both the finder scope and the main telescope's eyepiece.

Operation
Focusing
To focus the telescope, slowly turn the focusing knob located on the focuser tube until the image appears sharp and clear. Start with the lowest magnification eyepiece (highest focal length number) for easier focusing and wider field of view.
Changing Magnification
Your telescope comes with different eyepieces and a Barlow lens to achieve various magnifications.
- To change magnification, remove the current eyepiece and insert another.
- The Barlow lens increases the magnification of any eyepiece it is used with. Insert the Barlow lens into the diagonal mirror first, then insert an eyepiece into the Barlow lens.
- Higher magnifications are best used on clear, stable nights for astronomical objects, or for very distant terrestrial objects.
Terrestrial Viewing
For terrestrial viewing, the diagonal mirror provides a corrected image (right-side up, but still reversed left-to-right). This is suitable for observing landscapes, wildlife, or distant landmarks.
Astronomical Viewing
For astronomical viewing, use the finder scope to locate celestial objects. Once an object is centered in the finder scope, it should appear in the main telescope's eyepiece. Use the slow-motion controls on the tripod (if available) to track objects as they move across the sky.
Tip: The included "Star Walk 2" app can help you identify and locate stars, planets, and constellations in the night sky.
Maintenance
- Cleaning Lenses: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical lenses. Gently wipe the lens surface. For stubborn smudges, use a small amount of optical lens cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
- Dust Protection: Always replace the dust caps on the objective lens and eyepieces when the telescope is not in use.
- Storage: Store the telescope in its carrying case in a cool, dry, and dust-free environment. Avoid extreme temperatures and high humidity.
- Tripod Care: Keep the tripod legs clean and free of dirt or sand to ensure smooth operation.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Image is blurry or out of focus. | Incorrect focus setting; atmospheric conditions. | Adjust the focusing knob slowly. Wait for better atmospheric conditions if viewing distant objects. |
| Cannot find objects. | Finder scope not aligned; incorrect aiming. | Align the finder scope with the main telescope during daylight. Practice aiming at easily visible objects. |
| Image is dim or dark. | Too high magnification for conditions; light pollution. | Use a lower magnification eyepiece. Move to a darker viewing location away from city lights. |
| Image is upside down or reversed. | Normal for astronomical telescopes; diagonal mirror provides corrected image for terrestrial viewing. | This is normal for astronomical viewing. Ensure diagonal mirror is used for terrestrial viewing to get a right-side up image. |
