  • Independent panning action and pan lock for precise horizontal adjustments.
  • Independent friction control integrated within the main knob for fine-tuning ball tension.

Setup

Attaching the Ball Head to a Tripod

  1. Ensure your tripod is stable and securely set up on a level surface.
  2. Locate the 3/8-inch mounting screw on your tripod's center column or base.
  3. Align the threaded hole at the base of the MH496-BH ball head with the tripod's mounting screw.
  4. Rotate the ball head clockwise until it is firmly secured to the tripod. Do not overtighten.

Attaching the Quick Release Plate to Your Camera

  1. Detach the 200PL-PRO quick release plate from the ball head by opening the quick release lever.
  2. Locate the 1/4-inch tripod socket on the bottom of your camera.
  3. Align the screw on the 200PL-PRO plate with your camera's tripod socket.
  4. Use a coin or the integrated D-ring (if available on your plate) to tighten the screw securely. Ensure the plate is flush against the camera body to prevent rotation.

Operating the Ball Head

Mounting Your Camera

  1. With the 200PL-PRO plate attached to your camera, ensure the quick release lever on the ball head is open.
  2. Slide the camera with the attached plate into the quick release receiver on the ball head.
  3. Once the plate is fully seated, close the quick release lever firmly to lock the camera in place. Verify that the camera is secure before releasing your grip.

Adjusting Camera Position

  • Main Locking Knob: This large knob controls the movement of the ball. Loosen it to allow free movement of the camera for framing. Tighten it to lock the camera firmly in the desired position.
  • Friction Control Knob: Located within the main locking knob, this smaller knob allows you to adjust the friction of the ball movement. This helps prevent the camera from flopping over when the main knob is loosened, especially with heavier setups. Turn clockwise to increase friction, counter-clockwise to decrease.
  • Pan Lock Knob: This separate knob controls the horizontal panning movement of the head. Loosen it to rotate the camera horizontally without affecting the ball's tilt. Tighten it to lock the panning movement.

Always ensure all knobs are securely tightened before leaving your camera unattended on the ball head.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the ball head after each use. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, but ensure no moisture enters the internal mechanisms. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Lubrication: The ball head is designed to be maintenance-free regarding lubrication. Do not apply any lubricants to the ball or locking mechanisms, as this can attract dust and impair performance.
  • Storage: Store the ball head in a clean, dry environment, away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all knobs, levers, and the quick release plate for any signs of wear, damage, or looseness. If any issues are found, discontinue use and contact Manfrotto support.
