SHARPAL 162N Double-sided Diamond Sharpening Stone User Manual

Model: 162N | Brand: SHARPAL

Introduction

The SHARPAL 162N Double-sided Diamond Sharpening Stone is designed for efficient and precise sharpening of various blades and tools. Featuring industrial monocrystalline diamonds electroplated onto a durable stainless steel base, this sharpening stone offers two distinct grit levels: a coarse 325 grit for initial edge setting and an extra fine 1200 grit for honing and refining the edge. The product includes a protective storage case that doubles as a non-slip base during use, and an integrated sharpening angle guide to assist in achieving consistent angles.

Product Features

  • Dual Grit Design: Coarse 325 grit (45 micron) for quick edge setting and Extra Fine 1200 grit (12 micron) for honing.
  • Durable Construction: Industrial monocrystalline diamonds electroplated onto a 0.35-inch thick stainless steel base.
  • MirrorFlat Technology: Ensures a super flat surface for long-lasting, even contact with blades and tools.
  • Dry Sharpening: No messy oil or water is required for use.
  • Versatile Use: Suitable for sharpening hard materials including High Speed Steel, Carbide, Ceramic, and Cubic Boron Nitride.
  • Bonus Pack: Includes a storage box with a non-slip rubber pad that functions as a stone base, and a sharpening angle guide with 14°, 17°, 20°, and 25° universal angles.

Setup

  1. Unpack: Carefully remove the sharpening stone and accessories from the packaging.
  2. Prepare Base: The included storage case features a non-slip rubber pad on its underside. Open the case and place the sharpening stone securely into the designated slot in the case lid. This positions the stone at an optimal height and prevents it from sliding during sharpening.
  3. Angle Guide: Familiarize yourself with the sharpening angle guide. This small orange pyramid-shaped tool has four marked angles (14°, 17°, 20°, 25°) to assist in maintaining a consistent sharpening angle.

Operating Instructions

The SHARPAL 162N is designed for dry sharpening. No water or oil is needed. Always maintain a consistent angle throughout the sharpening process for best results.

1. Using the Coarse 325 Grit Side (Edge Setting)

The coarse 325 grit side is used for quickly setting a new edge, repairing dull or damaged blades, and removing significant material. This side is ideal for initial sharpening of very dull knives, chisels, axes, and other tools.

  1. Select Angle: Place the sharpening angle guide on the coarse side of the stone. Position your blade against the desired angle (e.g., 20° for most kitchen knives, 25° for outdoor/utility knives).
  2. Sharpening Motion: With light to moderate pressure, push the blade across the stone, leading with the edge. Maintain the selected angle throughout the stroke.
  3. Consistency: Perform several strokes on one side of the blade, then flip the blade and perform an equal number of strokes on the other side. Continue alternating until a burr (a slight wire edge) forms along the entire length of the blade's opposite side.

2. Using the Extra Fine 1200 Grit Side (Honing and Finishing)

The extra fine 1200 grit side is used for refining the edge, removing the burr, and achieving a razor-sharp finish. This step polishes the edge and prepares it for optimal cutting performance.

  1. Transition: Once a burr is established on the coarse side, switch to the extra fine 1200 grit side.
  2. Refine Edge: Using the same angle as before, perform lighter strokes on the extra fine side. Reduce pressure with each set of strokes.
  3. Burr Removal: Alternate sides frequently, reducing the number of strokes and pressure until the burr is completely removed and the edge feels smooth and sharp.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe the diamond sharpening stone clean with a damp cloth to remove any metal particles or debris. Do not use harsh chemicals.
  • Drying: Ensure the stone is completely dry before storing it to prevent any potential corrosion of the stainless steel base.
  • Storage: Store the sharpening stone in its protective case to prevent damage and keep it clean. The case also protects the diamond surface from accidental impact.

Troubleshooting

  • Uneven Edge: If the blade's edge appears uneven, it may be due to inconsistent angle maintenance. Use the angle guide more diligently and ensure even pressure across the blade during strokes.
  • Persistent Burr: If a burr remains after using the extra fine grit, reduce pressure further and perform very light, alternating strokes until the burr is removed. Ensure the entire edge makes contact with the stone.
  • Slow Sharpening: For very dull or damaged blades, ensure you are starting with the coarse 325 grit side. Apply moderate pressure initially to remove material efficiently before moving to finer grits.
