1. Introduction

3. Product Overview

Standard Horizon HX40 Handheld Marine VHF Transceiver

The Standard Horizon HX40 features a clear display showing channel 16, power level, and battery status. Key buttons for menu, volume, clear, and 16/S quick access are visible on the front panel.

4. Setup

4.1. Antenna Attachment

Carefully screw the CAT460 antenna onto the connector at the top of the HX40 radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.

4.2. Battery Installation & Charging

The HX40 comes with a built-in Lithium Polymer battery. To charge the radio, place it in the SBH-27 charger cradle. Connect the 110v AC adapter or the E-DC-19A 12v cigarette lighter cord to the cradle. A green light on the charger indicates a full charge.

4.3. Belt Clip & Hand Strap Attachment

Attach the SBH-19 belt clip to the designated slot on the back of the radio. The hand strap can be threaded through the loop on the belt clip for added security.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Power On/Off

Press and hold the power button (usually marked with a circle and a vertical line) to turn the radio on or off.

5.2. Channel Selection

Use the up/down arrow keys to navigate through VHF channels. Press the 16/S button for quick access to Channel 16 (distress/hailing) or a pre-selected sub-channel.

5.3. Transmit Power

The HX40 offers selectable transmit power outputs: 6W, 2.5W, and 1W. Refer to the manual's menu system for instructions on how to adjust this setting to conserve battery life or maximize range.

5.4. Audio Output

The radio features 600mW loud audio output for clear reception. Adjust the volume using the dedicated volume buttons.

5.5. Scanning & Multi-Watch

Utilize the menu system to activate scanning functions, including Dual Watch (monitoring Channel 16 and one user-selected channel) and Triple Watch (monitoring Channel 16, Channel 9, and one user-selected channel).

5.6. NOAA Weather Channels & Weather Alert

Access NOAA Weather Channels to receive up-to-date weather information. Enable the Weather Alert feature to be notified of severe weather conditions.

5.7. FM Broadcast Radio

The HX40 includes an FM broadcast radio receiver (76 MHz to 108 MHz) for entertainment. Select this mode via the menu.

5.8. Water Activated Emergency Strobe Light

In the event the radio is dropped in water, its water-activated emergency strobe light will automatically activate to aid in recovery.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Waterproofing

The HX40 is built to IPX7 standards, meaning it can withstand submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Ensure all covers and seals are properly closed before exposing the radio to water. For floating capability, use the optional SHC-29 flotation case.

6.2. General Care

Clean the radio with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Store the radio in a cool, dry place when not in use.
