2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety precautions before operating the transceiver. Failure to do so may result in injury, damage to the radio, or voiding the warranty.

  • Power Supply: Use only a 13.8V DC ± 15% power supply. Ensure correct polarity when connecting to the vehicle's electrical system.
  • Antenna: Connect a suitable antenna before transmitting. Transmitting without an antenna or with a mismatched antenna can damage the radio's final amplifier.
  • Heat: The radio can generate heat during prolonged transmission. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit. Avoid mounting in enclosed spaces without airflow.
  • Water Exposure: This device is not water-resistant. Avoid exposure to rain, moisture, or liquids.
  • Servicing: Do not attempt to open or service the radio yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified technicians.
  • Driving Safety: Do not operate the radio in a way that distracts you from driving. Prioritize road safety.

4.2 Power Connection

Connect the DC power cable to the radio's power input port. The red wire is positive (+), and the black wire is negative (-). Connect the other end to your vehicle's 13.8V DC power source, preferably directly to the battery or a fused accessory circuit capable of supplying sufficient current (up to 4 amps on high power transmit).

  • The included power cable has a cigarette lighter plug for convenience. For permanent installations, consider wiring directly to the battery with an inline fuse.

4.3 Antenna Connection

Connect a suitable VHF/UHF dual-band antenna to the SO-239 connector on the rear of the radio. Ensure the connection is tight and secure. Never transmit without an antenna connected.

4.4 Microphone Connection

Plug the speaker microphone cable into the RJ45 port on the front of the radio. Ensure it clicks into place securely.

4.5 Programming the Radio

The KT-8900D can be programmed manually or via computer software. For extensive channel programming, computer programming is highly recommended.

  • Programming Software: The radio supports programming via software like CHIRP or the manufacturer's dedicated software.
  • Programming Cable: Use the provided programming cable to connect the radio to your computer's USB port.
  • Driver Installation: You may need to install specific drivers for the programming cable. Some users have reported issues with newer operating systems requiring older driver versions (e.g., 2007-era drivers for Windows 11) or alternative FTDI cables. Refer to online resources or the manufacturer's support for the latest driver information.
  • Channel Setup: Program your desired frequencies, repeater offsets, CTCSS/DCS tones, and other settings into the radio's 200 available channels.

5. Operating Instructions
