Introduction

The MXR M228 Dyna Comp Deluxe Compressor brings enhanced control to the classic compression sound. This pedal is designed to shape and refine your guitar tone, offering both vintage and modern compression characteristics. Its circuitry is built around the CA3080 "metal can" integrated circuit, known for its quiet operation, transparency, and dynamic range.

Setup

Power Requirements

The Dyna Comp Deluxe operates on a 9V AC power adapter. Ensure the adapter is compatible with the pedal's power input. The power input jack is located on the side of the pedal.

Connecting the Pedal

Connect your guitar to the INPUT jack on the right side of the pedal using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable. Connect the OUTPUT jack on the left side of the pedal to your amplifier or the next pedal in your signal chain using another 1/4-inch instrument cable.

Battery Installation (Optional)

To install a 9V battery, remove the four screws on the bottom plate of the pedal. Carefully lift the bottom plate to access the battery compartment. Connect a 9V battery to the clip and place it inside the compartment. Replace the bottom plate and secure the screws.

Operating the Dyna Comp Deluxe

The Dyna Comp Deluxe features several controls to fine-tune your compression. Experiment with each knob and switch to find the sound that best suits your playing style.

Controls:

• OUTPUT: Controls the overall volume level of the compressed signal.
• SENSITIVITY: Adjusts the length of sustain. Higher sensitivity results in longer sustain.
• CLEAN: Blends your unaffected (dry) signal with the compressed signal. This allows for a balanced mix, preserving some of your original tone while benefiting from compression.
• TONE: Refines the character of the compressed signal, allowing you to brighten or darken the effect to your preference.
• ATTACK Switch: Toggles between two attack times:
  • Vintage (Slow Attack): Provides a more traditional, percussive compression feel.
  • Modern (Fast Attack): Offers a quicker response, suitable for contemporary playing styles.

Understanding Compression:

A compressor pedal reduces the dynamic range of your guitar signal. It makes louder notes quieter and quieter notes louder, resulting in a more even and sustained sound. This can be particularly useful for balancing dynamics when switching between loud chords and softer single-note lines.

Maintenance

• Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
• Storage: Store the pedal in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures or humidity.
• Connections: Periodically check all cables and connections for wear and tear to ensure optimal performance.

Troubleshooting

• No Sound:
  • Check all cable connections (input, output, power).
  • Ensure the power adapter is correctly connected and functioning, or that the 9V battery is fresh and properly installed.
  • Verify that your guitar and amplifier are working correctly by bypassing the pedal.
• Unwanted Noise/Hum:
  • Ensure all cables are properly shielded and in good condition.
  • Try using a different power supply to rule out power-related noise.
  • Move the pedal away from other electronic devices that might cause interference.
• Effect Not Engaging:
  • Press the footswitch firmly to ensure it engages. The LED indicator should light up when the effect is active.
  • Check the 'Clean' knob setting; if it's fully clockwise, you might be hearing mostly the dry signal.
