4. Installation

The Kwikset SmartCode 916 is designed for easy installation with a screwdriver. It fits standard doors between 1-3/8" and 1-3/4" thick.

  1. Prepare the Door: Ensure your door has standard bore holes for a deadbolt.
  2. Install the Latch: Insert the latch into the door edge and secure it with screws. Ensure the latch bolt faces the correct direction.
  3. Install the Exterior Assembly: Place the exterior keypad assembly onto the door, ensuring the spindle passes through the latch.
  4. Install the Interior Mounting Plate: Secure the interior mounting plate to the exterior assembly using the provided screws.
  5. Connect the Interior Assembly: Connect the cable from the exterior assembly to the interior assembly.
  6. Install the Interior Assembly: Mount the interior assembly onto the mounting plate. Ensure the turnpiece shaft aligns correctly with the latch mechanism.
  7. Install Batteries: Insert the 4 AA batteries into the battery pack.
  8. Perform Door Handing Process: After installation, the lock needs to learn the orientation of your door. Follow the instructions in the setup section for this critical step.

Important Note: If the interior turnpiece is oriented incorrectly after installation (e.g., pointing down when locked), it may be necessary to firmly rotate the turnpiece past its initial stops to align it correctly. This is a common adjustment and does not indicate a defect.

5. Setup

5.1 Door Handing Process

This step is crucial for the lock to function correctly. It teaches the lock the orientation of your door (left-handed or right-handed).

  1. With the door open and unlocked, press the "Lock" button on the exterior keypad.
  2. The latch bolt will extend and retract to determine the door's handing.
  3. If successful, the lock will beep and the keypad will illuminate.

5.2 Programming User Codes

You can program up to 30 unique user codes for keyless entry.

  1. Open the battery cover on the interior assembly.
  2. Press the "Program" button once.
  3. Enter a new 4-8 digit user code on the exterior keypad.
  4. Press the "Lock" button.
  5. If successful, the lock will beep and the keypad will flash green.
  6. Test the new user code with the door open to ensure it works.

5.3 Z-Wave Pairing

To integrate your SmartCode 916 with a Z-Wave smart home system (hub required), follow these steps:

  1. Place your Z-Wave controller (hub) into inclusion/pairing mode. Refer to your Z-Wave controller's manual for specific instructions.
  2. On the Kwikset lock, open the battery cover.
  3. Press the "A" button on the interior assembly once.
  4. The lock will attempt to pair with the Z-Wave controller.
  5. If successful, the lock will beep and the keypad will flash green. Your Z-Wave controller should confirm successful inclusion.
  6. It is recommended to perform pairing within 3-5 feet of the controller for optimal signal strength during the process.

The Kwikset SmartCode 916 is compatible with various Z-Wave systems, including Alexa, Google Assistant (via compatible hubs), SmartThings, and Wink.

6. Operation

6.1 Locking the Door

  • One-Touch Locking: Press the "Lock" button on the exterior keypad. The deadbolt will extend.
  • Manual Locking: Rotate the turnpiece on the interior assembly to the vertical position.

6.2 Unlocking the Door

  • Using a User Code:
    1. Touch the keypad with your palm or three fingers to activate it.
    2. (Optional SecureScreen™): If enabled, two random numbers will appear. Press these numbers in any order.
    3. Enter your 4-8 digit user code.
    4. Press the "Lock" button. The deadbolt will retract.
  • Using a Key: Insert the physical key into the key cylinder and turn to unlock.
  • Manual Unlocking: Rotate the turnpiece on the interior assembly to the horizontal position.

6.3 Auto-Lock Feature

The lock can be configured to automatically re-lock after a set period (e.g., 30 seconds) following an unlock event. Refer to the full user manual or Kwikset support for instructions on enabling and adjusting this feature.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Battery Replacement

The lock operates on 4 AA batteries, which typically last 12 months or longer. The lock will provide a low battery warning when replacement is needed.

  1. Remove the battery cover from the interior assembly.
  2. Remove the old AA batteries.
  3. Insert 4 new AA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Replace the battery cover.

7.2 Cleaning

Clean the lock's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish and electronic components.

7.3 SmartKey Re-Keying

The SmartKey Security feature allows you to re-key your lock to work with an existing Kwikset key. This process takes seconds and requires the SmartKey learn tool included in the package.
