ATAGO USA INC. PAL-RI
ATAGO PAL-RI Digital Pocket Refractometer User Manual
Model: PAL-RI | Brand: ATAGO
Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of the ATAGO PAL-RI Digital Pocket Refractometer. The PAL-RI is a compact, digital instrument designed for measuring the refractive index of various liquids. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the device and keep it for future reference.

Figure 1: ATAGO PAL-RI Digital Pocket Refractometer. This image displays the white, handheld refractometer with a digital display showing "1.34" for refractive index and "20.3°C" for temperature. The device features a sample stage at the top, a "START" button, and a "ZERO" button, along with the ATAGO logo and "PAL-RI" model designation.
Safety Precautions
- Do not immerse the refractometer in water or other liquids.
- Avoid dropping or subjecting the device to strong impacts.
- Use only specified batteries.
- Keep the sample stage clean and free from scratches.
- Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the device.
Setup
1. Battery Installation
- Open the battery compartment cover located on the back of the unit.
- Insert two AAA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
2. Initial Calibration (Zero Setting)
Before first use and periodically thereafter, perform a zero setting using distilled water.
- Ensure the sample stage is clean and dry.
- Apply 0.3 to 0.5 mL of distilled water onto the sample stage. Ensure the prism surface is fully covered.
- Press the ZERO button. The display will show "0.0000" or "ZERO" briefly, then return to the measurement screen.
- Wipe off the distilled water from the sample stage with a soft, clean cloth.
Note: Perform zero setting at the same ambient temperature as your samples for optimal accuracy.
Operating Instructions
1. Sample Preparation
- Ensure your sample is homogeneous and free of air bubbles or solid particles.
- Allow the sample to reach ambient temperature for accurate readings, especially if it differs significantly from the refractometer's temperature.
2. Taking a Measurement
- Clean and dry the sample stage thoroughly.
- Apply 0.3 to 0.5 mL of your sample onto the prism surface. Ensure the entire surface is covered without overflowing.
- Close the daylight plate gently (if applicable, though not explicitly shown for PAL-RI, it's good practice for some refractometers to prevent evaporation and ensure even spread).
- Press the START button. The measurement will be displayed within a few seconds.
- Read the refractive index value and temperature from the digital display.
3. After Measurement
- Immediately wipe off the sample from the prism surface using a soft, clean, and lint-free cloth or tissue.
- If necessary, clean the prism with a small amount of distilled water and then dry it completely.
- Ensure no residue remains on the prism or sample stage.
Maintenance
Cleaning
- Always clean the sample stage immediately after each use to prevent sample residue from drying and hardening.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth or tissue. For stubborn residues, a small amount of distilled water or a mild detergent solution can be used, followed by thorough drying.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals as they may damage the prism or casing.
Storage
- Store the refractometer in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
