Model: 2824-2 | Brand: Ewatchparts

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper handling, installation, and operation of your Ewatchparts ETA 2824-2 automatic watch movement. The ETA 2824-2 is a highly respected Swiss-made mechanical movement known for its reliability and precision, featuring 25 jewels, automatic winding, and a date function.

It is designed for watchmakers and enthusiasts for repair, replacement, or custom watch building. Please read these instructions carefully before proceeding with any work on the movement.

Safety Precautions

  • Always handle the movement with clean, lint-free gloves or finger cots to prevent contamination from oils and dust.
  • Use appropriate non-magnetic tools to avoid damaging delicate components.
  • Work in a clean, well-lit, and dust-free environment.
  • Avoid applying excessive force to any part of the movement.
  • Keep the movement away from strong magnetic fields.

Setup and Installation

The ETA 2824-2 movement is supplied ready for casing. The following steps outline the general procedure for preparing and installing the movement.

1. Inspect the Movement

Before installation, carefully inspect the movement for any visible damage or debris. Ensure all components are securely in place.

3. Insert the Winding Stem

Gently insert the winding stem into the movement. Locate the stem release lever or button (often marked with an arrow) and depress it slightly while inserting the stem. Once fully inserted, release the lever. Do not force the stem.

4. Casing the Movement

Place the assembled movement (with dial and hands) into the watch case. Secure it using movement clamps and screws, ensuring it is centered and stable within the case. Install the case back.

Operating Instructions

The ETA 2824-2 is an automatic movement that also supports manual winding and features a quick-set date function.

1. Winding the Movement

  • Automatic Winding: The movement is wound by the natural motion of your wrist. The rotor (visible on the back) rotates with movement, winding the mainspring.
  • Manual Winding: To manually wind the watch, turn the crown clockwise in position 1 (fully pushed in) for approximately 20-30 turns until you feel slight resistance. This provides enough power reserve to start the watch.

2. Setting the Date

  • Pull the crown out to position 2 (first click).
  • Turn the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise to adjust the date. Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM, as this is when the date change mechanism is engaged and could be damaged.
  • Once the correct date is displayed, push the crown back to position 1.

3. Setting the Time

  • Pull the crown out to position 3 (second click). The second hand will stop (hacking feature).
  • Turn the crown to set the correct time. To avoid confusion between AM/PM, advance the time past 12 o'clock. If the date changes, it is midnight.
  • Once the correct time is set, push the crown back to position 1. The second hand will resume movement.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your ETA 2824-2 movement.

  • Regular Servicing: Mechanical watch movements typically require servicing every 3-5 years. This involves disassembling, cleaning, lubricating, and regulating the movement. It is recommended to have this done by a qualified watchmaker.
  • Cleaning: Keep the exterior of the watch clean. If the movement is exposed, ensure it remains free of dust and moisture.
  • Water Resistance: If your watch case is water-resistant, ensure the crown is always pushed in fully to maintain its seal. Water resistance should be checked periodically by a professional.
  • Avoid Shocks: While robust, mechanical movements can be affected by severe shocks. Avoid dropping the watch or subjecting it to strong impacts.

Troubleshooting

Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Watch not running or stops frequently.Insufficient power reserve.Manually wind the watch by turning the crown 20-30 times. Wear the watch regularly to allow automatic winding.
Date not changing at midnight.Time is set to AM instead of PM, or date mechanism is stuck.Advance the time past 12 o'clock to ensure it's set for the correct AM/PM cycle. If the issue persists, professional servicing may be required.
Crown feels loose or does not engage.Stem not properly seated or damaged.Attempt to re-insert the stem carefully. If it remains loose or damaged, consult a watchmaker.
Watch runs too fast or too slow.Movement needs regulation or has been magnetized.Consult a watchmaker for regulation or demagnetization.
