2. Safety Information

  • General Safety: Keep this product away from children.
  • Installation: Ensure the lamp is securely installed in an appropriate fixture. Do not enclose this bulb in a fixture that restricts airflow, as it generates significant heat. Use with open, wire cage type light fixtures or large, high dome fixtures.
  • Operating Temperature: The bulb generates high heat. Ensure adequate distance from animals (refer to the Basking Distance Chart in Section 4) to prevent burns. Provide a cool side in the enclosure for temperature regulation.
  • Restart Delay: If the bulb is turned off, it will not immediately light up when turned back on. Allow a few minutes for it to cool down before it can restart. This is a built-in safety feature.
  • Handling: Avoid bumping or jostling the bulb while it is on. If it is disturbed, it may turn off as a safety measure. Wait approximately 10 minutes for it to re-illuminate automatically.
  • Voltage and Frequency: Ensure your power supply matches the lamp's requirements (100-120 Volts, 60 Hertz).

3. Setup and Installation

  1. Choose a Fixture: Select a ceramic lamp fixture with an E26/E27 standard screw port that is rated for the lamp's wattage (160W). The fixture should be designed for heat lamps and allow for proper ventilation.
  2. Secure Placement: Position the fixture above the reptile enclosure, ensuring it is stable and cannot be knocked over.
  3. Install the Bulb: Carefully screw the REPTI ZOO 160W lamp into the E26/E27 socket until snug. Do not overtighten.
  4. Determine Basking Distance: Refer to the Basking Distance Chart in Section 4 to determine the appropriate distance between the lamp and the basking spot. This is crucial for providing optimal temperature and UV levels without causing harm.
  5. Power Connection: Plug the fixture into a suitable power outlet.

4. Operating Instructions

The REPTI ZOO 160W lamp provides a full spectrum of light, including visible light, heat, UVA, and UVB, crucial for reptile health.

  • UVA Radiation: Provides warmth, mimicking natural sunlight, which is essential for cold-blooded animals' thermoregulation and natural behaviors.
  • UVB Radiation: Promotes Vitamin D3 synthesis, which is vital for calcium metabolism and preventing metabolic bone disease in reptiles.
  • Heat Output: The lamp generates significant heat, creating a basking spot. Always monitor the temperature at the basking site using a thermometer.

Basking Distance Chart

The following table provides approximate temperature and UV readings at various distances from the bulb. These values are based on a test environment temperature of 22-23°C and 65% relative humidity. Actual readings may vary based on enclosure setup and ambient conditions.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Ensure the lamp is cool and unplugged before cleaning. Gently wipe the exterior of the bulb with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or debris. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Replacement: Mercury vapor bulbs have a finite lifespan for UV output, typically 6-12 months, even if they continue to emit visible light and heat. It is recommended to replace the bulb periodically to ensure adequate UVA and UVB provision for your reptile's health.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the bulb and fixture for any signs of damage, such as cracks, loose connections, or discoloration. Replace immediately if any damage is observed.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Bulb Does Not Light Immediately After Turning On: This is a normal safety feature for mercury vapor bulbs. If the bulb was recently on and is still warm, it needs a few minutes to cool down before it can restart. Wait approximately 5-10 minutes.
  • Bulb Turns Off Unexpectedly: If the bulb is bumped or jostled while operating, a safety mechanism may cause it to turn off. Allow it to cool down for about 10 minutes, and it should re-illuminate automatically.
  • Insufficient Heat/UV Output:
    • Verify the lamp's wattage matches your fixture's rating.
    • Check the distance from the basking spot using the Basking Distance Chart. Adjust as necessary.
    • Ensure the ambient room temperature is not excessively low, as this can affect overall enclosure temperature.
    • If the bulb has been in use for an extended period (over 6-12 months), its UV output may have diminished, even if it still produces light and heat. Consider replacing the bulb.
  • Bulb Flickers or Appears Dim: Ensure the bulb is screwed in tightly. Check the fixture for any loose wiring or damage. If the issue persists, the bulb may be nearing the end of its lifespan or be faulty.
