Setup

1. Initial Unboxing

2. Filling the Water Tank

  • Ensure the appliance is unplugged from the mains.
  • Remove the detachable water tank from the base unit.
  • Fill the water tank with tap water up to the 'MAX' indication. For optimal performance and to prolong the life of your appliance, it is recommended to use demineralized or distilled water, especially in areas with hard water.
  • Slide the water tank back into the base unit until it clicks into place.

3. First Use Preparation

  • Place the steam generator on a stable, flat, and heat-resistant surface.
  • Unwind the power cord completely and plug it into a grounded wall socket.
  • The appliance will start heating up. The 'iron ready' light will illuminate when the iron is ready for use. This may take a few minutes.
  • For the first use, iron a piece of old fabric for a few minutes to remove any manufacturing residues from the soleplate.

Operating the Appliance

1. Powering On/Off

Plug the power cord into a wall socket to turn on the appliance. Unplug it to turn it off.

2. Temperature Settings

The Philips GC6800/20 features OptimalTEMP technology, which means you do not need to adjust the temperature. It is safe for all ironable fabrics, from denim to silk, without the risk of burning.

3. Steam Functions

  • Continuous Steam: Press and hold the steam trigger under the handle for continuous steam. Release the trigger to stop steaming.
  • Steam Boost: For stubborn creases, press the steam trigger twice quickly to activate the powerful steam boost function.

4. Vertical Steaming

The iron can be used for vertical steaming of hanging garments, curtains, or delicate fabrics. Hold the iron vertically a few centimeters away from the fabric and press the steam trigger.

5. Ironing Tips

  • Always check the garment's care label for ironing instructions.
  • Iron fabrics that require lower temperatures first.
  • For best results, iron fabrics inside out to prevent shine.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning the Soleplate

To clean the soleplate, wipe it with a damp cloth and a non-abrasive (liquid) cleaner. Do not use scouring pads, abrasive cleaning agents, or sharp objects as these will scratch the soleplate.

2. Descaling / Calc-Clean Function

Regular descaling is crucial to maintain optimal steam performance and prolong the life of your appliance. The appliance has a built-in descaling system.

  • When the 'Calc-Clean' light starts flashing and the appliance beeps, it indicates that descaling is required.
  • Ensure the water tank is empty.
  • Place a container under the Calc-Clean opening (usually located on the side or back of the base unit).
  • Press and hold the Calc-Clean button for 2 seconds until the appliance starts the descaling process.
  • The process takes approximately 2 minutes. Steam and hot water will be discharged from the soleplate.
  • When the process is complete, the 'Calc-Clean' light will turn off.
  • Wipe the soleplate with a cloth.

Note: The frequency of descaling depends on the hardness of your water and how often you use the appliance.

3. Storing the Appliance

After use, unplug the appliance and allow it to cool down completely. Empty the water tank. Wrap the power cord and steam hose around the base unit for neat storage. Store the iron securely on its base.
