Setup and Installation

This brake kit is designed for a direct bolt-on installation without the need for modifications. However, professional installation is recommended. The following steps provide a general overview; always consult your vehicle's specific service manual for detailed instructions and torque specifications.

General Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the Vehicle: Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and block the wheels. Loosen lug nuts on the wheels to be serviced. Jack up the vehicle and secure it with jack stands. Remove the wheels.
  2. Remove Old Components:
    • Carefully disconnect the brake line from the old caliper. Be prepared for brake fluid leakage.
    • Remove the caliper mounting bolts and slide the old caliper off the rotor.
    • Remove the old brake rotor. If stuck, use a rubber mallet to gently tap it loose.
  3. Prepare New Components:
    • Clean the wheel hub surface thoroughly to ensure proper seating of the new rotor.
    • Apply a thin layer of high-temperature lubricant to the caliper slide pins and contact points on the brake pads and hardware.

  4. Install New Rotor: Slide the new drilled and slotted brake rotor onto the wheel studs, ensuring it sits flush against the hub.
  5. Install New Caliper and Pads:
    • Install the new brake pads into the new calipers with the provided hardware.
    • Mount the new caliper over the rotor and secure it with the caliper mounting bolts. Torque to vehicle manufacturer specifications.
    • Connect the brake line to the new caliper, ensuring a secure, leak-free connection.
  6. Bleed the Brake System: After installing all components, it is crucial to bleed the entire brake system to remove any air that may have entered. Follow your vehicle's specific bleeding procedure.
  7. Final Checks: Reinstall the wheels and torque lug nuts to specification. Lower the vehicle. Pump the brake pedal several times until a firm pedal is achieved before driving. Check for any fluid leaks.

Operating Characteristics

The Power Stop Z23 Evolution Sport Brake Kit is engineered for enhanced performance and durability in daily driving conditions. Key characteristics include:

  • Improved Stopping Power: The Z23 carbon-fiber ceramic brake pads and drilled & slotted rotors work together to provide superior braking performance compared to original equipment.
  • Low Dust & Noise-Free: The ceramic formula of the brake pads is designed to produce significantly less dust and operate quietly, enhancing wheel appearance and driving comfort.
  • Enhanced Cooling: Precision drill holes in the rotors facilitate maximum cooling, reducing brake fade during demanding conditions. Rounded slots help clear gas and debris from the pad surface.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Silver Zinc Dichromate plating on the rotors and red powder coating on the calipers provide excellent protection against rust and corrosion, extending component life and maintaining appearance.

Maintenance

Regular inspection and maintenance are crucial for the longevity and performance of your brake system. It is recommended to inspect your brakes at least once a year or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

  • Brake Pad Wear: Monitor brake pad thickness. Replace pads when they reach their minimum recommended thickness (typically 2-3mm).
  • Rotor Condition: Check rotors for excessive wear, deep grooves, cracks, or warping. While Power Stop rotors are designed for durability, severe conditions may necessitate replacement.
  • Caliper Function: Ensure calipers move freely on their slide pins. Inspect for any signs of fluid leaks around the caliper or brake lines. The red powder coating on the calipers helps resist rust and corrosion, but regular cleaning can maintain their appearance.
  • Brake Fluid: Check brake fluid level and condition regularly. Top up with the correct DOT-rated fluid as needed. Brake fluid should be flushed and replaced according to your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Hardware: Inspect all brake hardware for corrosion or damage. Replace as necessary.

Troubleshooting

Common Brake System Issues
SymptomPossible CauseSolution
Squealing/Grinding NoiseWorn brake pads, foreign object, improper installation, lack of lubricant.Inspect pads for wear, check for debris, re-lubricate contact points, ensure proper installation.
Vibration/Pulsation during BrakingWarped rotors, uneven pad wear, loose wheel bearings.Inspect rotors for runout, check pad wear, consult a technician for wheel bearing inspection.
Soft/Spongy Brake PedalAir in the brake lines, low brake fluid, faulty master cylinder.Bleed the brake system thoroughly, check fluid level, inspect for leaks.
Brake Fade (reduced braking effectiveness)Overheated brakes, worn pads/rotors.Allow brakes to cool, inspect for wear. Power Stop Z23 kit is designed to resist fade.

If you experience persistent issues or are unsure about diagnosing a problem, it is always best to consult a certified automotive mechanic.
