Setup

The ESEE LS-P-E Laser Strike is designed for immediate use, but understanding its components and sheath system is beneficial.

Sheath Attachment

The knife comes with an ambidextrous black Kydex sheath. This sheath is designed for secure retention and quick deployment. Various attachment options are available, allowing for vertical or horizontal carry depending on user preference and additional hardware (not included unless specified).

Handle Components

The Micarta handle scales are removable. Beneath the handle scales, the knife features a compartment designed to hold a fire starting kit, which typically includes a fire steel and tinder. To access this compartment, carefully remove the screws securing the handle scales. Ensure all components are reassembled securely after inspection or use of the kit.

Operating Instructions

The ESEE LS-P-E Laser Strike is a versatile tool for various outdoor and utility tasks. Always exercise caution and follow safety guidelines when handling any sharp instrument.

General Use

  • Cutting: The 1095 carbon steel blade is designed for robust cutting tasks. Apply appropriate pressure and technique for the material being cut.
  • Batoning: The full tang construction and blade thickness make it suitable for batoning wood for fire preparation. Always strike the spine of the blade with a wooden baton, not directly with a hammer or hard object.
  • Carving/Feathering: While capable, some users may find the blade's geometry requires specific technique for fine carving or feathering wood. Practice on scrap material to develop proficiency.

Fire Starting

The knife features a bow drill divot in the handle, designed to assist in primitive fire starting methods. Additionally, the fire steel and tinder stored within the handle can be used in conjunction with the blade's spine (not the sharpened edge) to generate sparks and ignite tinder.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance is crucial for preserving the performance and appearance of your ESEE LS-P-E Laser Strike knife.

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in wet or corrosive environments, clean the blade and handle thoroughly with mild soap and water. Dry completely.
  • Rust Prevention: The 1095 carbon steel blade is prone to rust if not properly cared for. Apply a thin layer of lubricant or rust preventative to the blade regularly, especially after exposure to moisture. This includes the edge and any exposed steel.
  • Sharpening: Maintain a sharp edge for optimal performance and safety. Use appropriate sharpening tools and techniques for carbon steel blades.
  • Handle Care: The Micarta handle is durable but can be cleaned with soap and water. Applying a small amount of lubricant to the handle material can also help preserve it.
  • Sheath Care: Clean the Kydex sheath as needed with soap and water. Ensure it is dry before re-sheathing the knife.

Troubleshooting

Most issues with your ESEE LS-P-E Laser Strike can be resolved with proper care and technique.

  • Dull Edge: If the blade becomes dull, it requires sharpening. Refer to reputable knife sharpening guides for proper technique.
  • Rust Spots: Small rust spots can be removed with fine abrasive pads or rust removers designed for steel. Immediately clean and re-lubricate the affected area to prevent recurrence.
  • Difficulty with Fine Tasks (e.g., Feathering): The blade geometry is robust. If experiencing difficulty with fine tasks, ensure the blade is adequately sharp. Adjusting technique or practicing on different wood types may also be beneficial.
  • Loose Handle Scales: If the handle scales feel loose, check the screws that secure them. Tighten them gently with an appropriate screwdriver. Do not overtighten.
