5.2 Placement

Place the scale on a flat, stable, and level surface. Ensure there are no vibrations or drafts that could affect the accuracy of the readings. Place the silicone protective pad on the weighing platform to protect the scale and provide stability for your brewing vessel.

  • To turn off: Press and hold the ON/OFF button for a few seconds.

6.2 Changing Units

6.3 Setting the Coffee-to-Water Ratio

Before starting your brew, you can adjust the desired coffee-to-water ratio:

  1. Turn on the scale.
  2. Press and hold the RATIO button.
  3. While holding RATIO, press it repeatedly to cycle through ratios from 1:14 to 1:20.
  4. Release the RATIO button when your desired ratio is displayed. The scale will remember this setting.

6.4 Operating Modes (Automatic vs. Manual)

Press the MODE button to switch between Automatic and Manual modes.

  • Automatic Mode: Automatically tares the scale and starts the timer when a brewing vessel is placed on it and water is added.
  • Manual Mode: Requires manual activation of the tare and timer functions. This mode offers more control over the brewing process.

6.5 Pour Over Brewing Process (Manual Mode Example)

Follow these steps for a precise pour-over using the Brewista Ratio Scale in Manual Mode:

  1. Prepare the Scale: Place the scale on a stable surface. Ensure it is charged.
  2. Weigh Beans: Place an empty container on the scale. Turn the scale on. It will automatically tare to zero. Add your whole coffee beans to the container to your desired weight. Remove the beans and grind them.
  3. Prepare Brewer: Place your brewing vessel (e.g., Chemex, V60) with a filter on the scale. Press the ZERO button to tare the weight of the vessel and filter. The display will show "0.0".
  4. Add Ground Coffee: Add your ground coffee to the filter. You can temporarily lift the brewer to settle the grounds, then place it back on the scale.
  5. Activate Ratio Calculation: Press the RATIO button. The scale will calculate the target water weight based on the weight of your coffee grounds and the pre-set ratio. The target water weight will be displayed, and a kettle icon will appear.
  6. Start Bloom: Begin pouring water for the bloom. Aim for approximately 2-3 times the weight of your coffee grounds.
  7. Start Timer: Once the bloom is complete (typically 30-45 seconds), press the TIMER button to start the brewing timer.
  8. Monitor Pour Rate: Observe the dual timing bars on the display. The "Actual" bar shows your current pour rate, while the "Target" bar indicates the ideal rate for a 2.5-minute pour. Adjust your pouring speed to keep the "Actual" bar aligned with the "Target" bar.
  9. Continue Pouring: Continue pouring water until you reach the target water weight displayed on the scale.
  10. Finish Pour: As you approach the target weight (within 60g), the display will start blinking to indicate you are nearing completion. Stop pouring when the target weight is reached.
  11. Allow Drip: Let the coffee finish dripping through the filter. The total brew time (including drip) should be between 4 to 6 minutes.
