Meinl Pickup Slaptop Cajon Box Drum (PTOPCAJ2WN) Instruction Manual

Introduction

The Meinl Pickup Slaptop Cajon (model PTOPCAJ2WN) is a unique percussion instrument designed for versatile playing. Its T-shape allows for comfortable upright playing, positioning the playing surface in your lap. This cajon features a walnut playing surface, internal snares, and forward-projecting sound ports for clear acoustic sound. Equipped with internal Piezo pickups, it allows for amplification and sound control through an external amplifier or PA system, making it suitable for various performance settings.

Setup

To begin using your Meinl Pickup Slaptop Cajon, place it comfortably in your lap with the playing surface facing upwards. The unique T-shape is designed to maintain an upright playing posture, reducing the need to lean over.

Amplification Setup

For amplified sound, connect the cajon to an amplifier or PA system using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable (not included). The cajon features two 1/4-inch jacks:

  • OUTPUT: Connect your instrument cable here to send the cajon's signal to an amplifier or PA system.
  • LINK: This jack allows you to connect other Meinl passive pickup instruments through the cajon's system, controlling their output with the cajon's dials.

The internal Piezo pickups do not require batteries for operation.

Operation

Playing Techniques

The walnut playing surface is designed to produce distinct bass and snare tones based on where you strike it:

  • Bass Tones: Strike the center of the playing surface for deep, punchy bass notes.
  • Snare Tones: Strike closer to the sides of the playing surface for crisp snare sounds.

The cajon can be played with hands or cajon brushes.

Sound Adjustment

When amplified, use the dedicated dials on the control panel to fine-tune your sound:

  • BASS Dial: Adjusts the volume and presence of the bass frequencies.
  • SNARE Dial: Adjusts the volume and crispness of the snare sounds.

These controls allow you to achieve a balanced tone and mix suitable for your performance environment.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Meinl Pickup Slaptop Cajon, follow these general maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Wipe the playing surface and body with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.
  • Storage: Store the cajon in a stable environment, away from extreme temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight, which can affect the wood.
  • Handling: Handle the instrument with care to prevent dents, scratches, or damage to the playing surface and electronic components.

Troubleshooting

  • No Sound When Amplified:
    • Ensure the 1/4-inch cable is securely connected to both the cajon's OUTPUT jack and the amplifier/PA system.
    • Verify that the amplifier/PA system is powered on and its volume is set appropriately.
    • Check the Bass and Snare dials on the cajon; ensure they are not set to zero.
  • Weak Bass or Snare Sound:
    • Adjust the Bass and Snare dials on the cajon to increase their respective volumes.
    • Experiment with striking different areas of the playing surface to achieve desired tones.
    • If playing acoustically in a large venue or with other loud instruments, amplification is recommended for optimal projection.
  • Loose Pickup Screws:
    • Periodically check the screws on the pickup panel. If they become loose, gently tighten them. Avoid over-tightening.
    • If screws or nuts are missing or the pickup system is damaged, contact Meinl customer support for assistance.
