Smartwares FGA-1300 Carbon Monoxide Alarm User Manual

Model: FGA-1300

1. Introduction to Carbon Monoxide (CO)

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a deadly gas that cannot be detected by human senses because it is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. It is produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels such as gas, oil, wood, and coal, commonly found in household appliances like ovens, stoves, and gas boilers. Modern, well-insulated homes can trap CO, increasing the risk of poisoning.

The Smartwares FGA-1300 Carbon Monoxide Alarm is designed to provide an early warning of dangerous CO levels, allowing you to take timely safety measures and prevent CO poisoning. Its loud 85 dB alarm activates when CO concentration exceeds safe limits.

3. Setup and Installation

Proper placement and installation are crucial for the effective operation of your CO alarm.

Recommended Placement:

  • Near Combustion Appliances: Install the detector high on a wall, between 1 to 3 meters (approximately 3 to 10 feet) away from any fuel-burning appliances (e.g., boilers, water heaters, fireplaces, gas stoves).
  • Living Areas and Bedrooms: In rooms like bedrooms or living rooms, it is recommended to place the CO alarm at breathing height.
  • General Guidelines: Avoid placing the detector in direct sunlight, near vents, windows, or areas with high humidity or extreme temperatures. Do not place it behind curtains or furniture that could obstruct the sensor.

Mounting Instructions:

  1. Select a suitable location according to the placement guidelines above.
  2. Mark the position for the screw on the wall.
  3. Drill a hole at the marked position and insert the wall plug.
  4. Insert the screw into the wall plug, leaving a small gap (approximately 3mm) between the screw head and the wall.
  5. Align the mounting slot on the back of the CO alarm with the screw head.
  6. Slide the detector onto the screw and push it downwards gently to secure it. The detector will activate automatically upon proper mounting.

  • POWER (Green LED): Flashes periodically to indicate the unit is powered on and functioning correctly.
  • ALARM (Red LED): Flashes and the audible alarm sounds when carbon monoxide is detected at dangerous levels.
  • FAULT (Amber LED): Illuminates to indicate a fault or low battery condition.

Alarm Conditions:

When the alarm detects a dangerous level of CO, the red ALARM LED will flash, and a loud 85 dB siren will sound. In case of an alarm:

  1. Open windows and doors to ventilate the area.
  2. Evacuate all occupants from the premises immediately.
  3. Do not re-enter the premises until the alarm has stopped and the area has been thoroughly ventilated.
  4. Contact emergency services or a qualified technician to investigate the source of the CO.

Test Button:

Press the 'TEST/SILENCE' button to check the alarm's functionality. The alarm will sound briefly, and the red ALARM LED will flash, confirming that the siren and indicator lights are working. This test should be performed monthly.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliability of your CO alarm.

Cleaning:

  • Monthly: Clean the exterior of the detector monthly using a slightly damp cloth.
  • Every 6 Months: Use a vacuum cleaner to gently remove dust and debris from the air inlet slots.
  • Important: Never use cleaning products, solvents, or paint on the detector, as these can damage the sensor and impair its function.

Testing:

Test the detector monthly using the 'TEST/SILENCE' button to ensure the alarm and indicators are working correctly.
