Max Water 10"x 2.5" Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Water Filter Cartridge Instruction Manual

1. Product Overview

The Max Water Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filter cartridge is designed to enhance water quality by reducing various impurities. This filter utilizes advanced granular activated carbon to effectively remove chlorine, unpleasant tastes, odors, and organic chemicals from both well water and municipal water sources.

These 10-inch by 2.5-inch filter cartridges are universally compatible with standard 10x2.5 water filter housings, including most whole house systems and reverse osmosis setups. They are designed to be compatible with models such as AP117, GAC-10, GAC1, WHKF-GAC, Ametek C-10, WCC, and 3M CFS117.

Each cartridge provides reliable filtration for up to 6 months, depending on water quality and usage, ensuring consistent performance for residential and commercial applications.

3. Installation (Setup)

This filter is designed for easy replacement in most standard RO systems and whole house filter housings. Ensure you have the correct housing for a 10" x 2.5" filter cartridge. Filter housing is sold separately.

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the System: Turn off the main water supply to the filter system and relieve any pressure in the housing by opening a nearby faucet.
  2. Open the Housing: Using a filter wrench, twist the filter housing counter-clockwise to loosen and remove it.
  3. Remove Used Filter: Carefully take out the old filter cartridge and dispose of it properly.
  4. Clean Housing: Clean the inside of the filter housing with warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Inspect the O-ring for any damage and replace if necessary. Lubricate the O-ring with a silicone-based lubricant if needed.
  5. Prepare New Filter: Unwrap the new Max Water GAC filter cartridge from its protective plastic packaging.
  6. Insert New Filter: Place the new filter cartridge into the housing, ensuring it is centered and seated correctly.
  7. Close the Housing: Screw the filter housing back onto the system clockwise. Hand-tighten first, then use the filter wrench for a snug fit. Do not overtighten.
  8. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn on the main water supply. Check for leaks around the housing. Flush the system by running water through a faucet for several minutes to remove any carbon fines.

4. Operating Principles

The Max Water GAC filter operates on the principle of adsorption. As water flows through the cartridge, the granular activated carbon media captures and holds impurities on its surface. This process effectively removes:

  • Chlorine: Reduces chlorine and chloramine, which are commonly used disinfectants in municipal water.
  • Taste and Odor: Eliminates unpleasant tastes and odors, often caused by chlorine and organic compounds.
  • Organic Chemicals: Adsorbs various organic compounds, including trihalomethanes (THMs) and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs).
  • Fine Sediments: Captures fine particulate matter that may have passed through a preceding sediment filter.

Note: This GAC filter is not intended to be a primary sediment filter. For optimal performance and extended filter life, it should be used after a sediment filter in a multi-stage filtration system. This cartridge will not remove chemicals or disinfect water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the unit.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance, primarily filter replacement, is crucial for ensuring the continued effectiveness of your water filtration system.

Filter Replacement Schedule:

  • The Max Water GAC filter cartridge has an estimated lifespan of 6 to 12 months.
  • The actual lifespan may vary significantly based on your local water quality, the volume of water filtered, and the specific contaminants present.
  • It is recommended to replace the filter at least every 6 months to maintain optimal filtration performance and water quality.

Indicators for Replacement:

  • Return of Taste or Odor: If you notice the return of chlorine taste, chemical odors, or other unpleasant flavors in your filtered water, it indicates the carbon media is exhausted.
  • Reduced Water Flow: While GAC filters are not primarily for sediment, a significant reduction in water flow can sometimes indicate a heavily loaded filter, especially if a preceding sediment filter is also due for replacement.

Refer to the Installation section (Section 3) for detailed steps on how to replace the filter cartridge.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your GAC filter.

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • Reduced Water Flow:
    • Cause: Clogged filter due to high sediment load or exceeding filter lifespan.
    • Solution: Replace the GAC filter. If you have a multi-stage system, check and replace the sediment pre-filter as well.
  • Unpleasant Taste or Odor Returns:
    • Cause: The activated carbon media is exhausted and can no longer adsorb contaminants.
    • Solution: Replace the GAC filter immediately.
  • Leaking from Filter Housing:
    • Cause: Improperly seated O-ring, damaged O-ring, or housing not tightened sufficiently.
    • Solution: Turn off water supply, open housing, inspect O-ring for damage (replace if needed), ensure it is properly seated, and tighten the housing securely (do not overtighten).
  • Black Water After Filter Replacement:
    • Cause: Carbon fines from the new GAC filter. This is normal.
    • Solution: Flush the system by running water through a faucet for several minutes until the water runs clear.
