Hydronix 5 Stage RO Water Filter Cartridges HX-RO-4PK User Manual

Pre & Post Replacement Set (SED, UDF, CTO, GAC) - 2.5" x 10" 4 Pack

Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Hydronix 5 Stage Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Filter Cartridges, Model HX-RO-4PK. This 4-piece set includes pre-filters and a post-filter designed for mid-year replacement in standard RO systems. Proper installation and maintenance ensure optimal performance and water quality.

Safety Precautions

  • Always turn off the water supply to your RO system before attempting any installation or maintenance.
  • Depressurize the system by opening the RO faucet to relieve pressure.
  • Use appropriate tools and follow instructions carefully to prevent leaks or damage.
  • Keep filters and components clean during installation to avoid contamination.
  • Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.

Installation Guide (Filter Replacement)

This guide assumes you are replacing existing filters in a standard 5-stage RO system. Refer to your RO system's specific manual for housing removal and reassembly instructions if needed.

  1. Prepare the System:
    • Turn off the cold water supply valve to the RO system.
    • Open the RO faucet to relieve system pressure and drain the storage tank. Leave the faucet open.
    • Disconnect the power supply to any booster pump or UV lamp, if applicable.
  2. Remove Old Pre-Filters (Stages 1, 2, 3):
    • Place a towel or bucket under the filter housings to catch any spilled water.
    • Use a filter wrench (typically included with your RO system) to unscrew the three pre-filter housings. Turn counter-clockwise.
    • Remove the old sediment (Stage 1), UDF (Stage 2), and carbon block (Stage 3) filters. Discard them properly.
    • Clean the inside of the filter housings with warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Inspect O-rings for damage and replace if necessary. Lubricate O-rings with food-grade silicone grease if available.
  3. Install New Pre-Filters (Stages 1, 2, 3):
    • Unwrap the new filters. Ensure correct placement:
      • Stage 1: Sediment Filter (white, typically ribbed or spun polypropylene).
      • Stage 2: UDF Carbon Filter (granular activated carbon, often with a mesh wrap).
      • Stage 3: Carbon Block Filter (solid carbon block).
    • Insert each new filter into its respective housing. Ensure it is centered.
    • Screw the housings back onto the system head by hand until snug, then use the filter wrench for a final quarter-turn to ensure a tight seal. Do not overtighten.
  4. Replace Post-Filter (Stage 5 - GAC Inline Filter):
    • Locate the existing GAC inline post-filter, usually a smaller filter positioned after the RO membrane housing and before the faucet.
    • Note the direction of water flow (indicated by an arrow on the filter body).
    • Disconnect the tubing from both ends of the old inline filter. You may need to use quick-connect fittings or threaded connections (1/4" NPT).
    • Install the new GAC inline filter, ensuring the flow arrow matches the water direction. Connect the tubing securely.
  5. Restore Water Supply and Check for Leaks:
    • Slowly turn on the cold water supply valve to the RO system.
    • Inspect all connections and filter housings for leaks. Tighten any leaking connections gently.
    • Allow the system to fill with water. You may hear water flowing into the housings.

Initial System Flush

After replacing filters, it is essential to flush the system to remove any carbon fines or air from the new filters.

  1. With the RO faucet still open, allow water to flow for at least 10-15 minutes, or until the water runs clear and free of air bubbles.
  2. Close the RO faucet and allow the storage tank to fill completely. This may take 2-4 hours depending on water pressure and tank size.
  3. Once the tank is full, open the RO faucet and drain the entire tank. Discard this first tank of water.
  4. Repeat the fill and drain cycle 2-3 times to ensure thorough flushing and optimal taste.

Maintenance and Filter Replacement Schedule

Regular filter replacement is crucial for maintaining the performance and water quality of your RO system. This 4-piece set is designed for mid-year replacement, typically 2-4 times per year, depending on your water usage and local water quality. The RO membrane (not included in this set) is usually replaced once a year.

Recommended Filter Replacement Schedule
Filter TypeReplacement Frequency
Sediment Filter (Stage 1)Every 3-6 months
UDF Carbon Filter (Stage 2)Every 3-6 months
Carbon Block Filter (Stage 3)Every 3-6 months
GAC Polishing Inline Filter (Stage 5)Every 6-12 months
RO Membrane (Not included in this set)Every 12-24 months

Note: Actual replacement frequency may vary based on incoming water quality and usage. If you notice a decrease in water flow or a change in taste/odor, it may be time to replace your filters sooner.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Low Water Flow from Faucet:
  • Clogged Filters: Pre-filters or the GAC post-filter may be clogged. Replace them according to the maintenance schedule or sooner if water quality is poor.
  • Low Water Pressure: Ensure the cold water supply valve is fully open.
  • Air in System: Ensure the system has been properly flushed after filter replacement.
Unpleasant Taste or Odor:
  • Expired Carbon Filters: Carbon filters (UDF, CTO, GAC) remove chlorine and other taste/odor contaminants. Replace them if taste/odor returns.
  • Improper Flush: Ensure the system was thoroughly flushed after filter replacement to remove carbon fines.
Water Leaks:
  • Loose Connections: Check all fittings and filter housings. Gently tighten any loose connections.
  • Damaged O-rings: Inspect O-rings on filter housings for cracks or improper seating. Replace if damaged.
