Introduction

This user manual provides comprehensive instructions for the APC 1500VA Smart UPS with SmartConnect, model SMC1500C. This uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is designed to protect your servers, switches, routers, and networking devices from power outages and harmful power conditions. It offers backup battery power, Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), and cloud-enabled monitoring via APC SmartConnect.

Key features include a 1500VA / 900W pure sine wave output, eight NEMA 5-15R outlets for battery backup and surge protection, and intelligent battery management for extended battery life. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety instructions before installing, operating, or maintaining the UPS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or equipment damage.

  • Electrical Shock Hazard: The UPS contains potentially hazardous voltages. Do not attempt to disassemble the unit. Servicing should only be performed by qualified personnel.
  • Battery Safety: The UPS contains sealed lead-acid batteries. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode. Do not open or mutilate batteries. Released electrolyte is harmful to the skin and eyes.
  • Weight Warning: The UPS unit weighs approximately 44.3 pounds (20.1 kg). Use proper lifting techniques and assistance when moving the unit to prevent injury.
  • Proposition 65 Warning: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
  • Indoor Use Only: This UPS is designed for indoor use in a controlled environment.

Setup

1. Unboxing and Inspection

Carefully remove the UPS from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any shipping damage. Retain the packaging for future use or transport.

2. Battery Connection

The internal battery is disconnected for shipment. Before initial use, you must connect the battery. Refer to the instructions provided on the unit or in the quick start guide for the specific steps to connect the internal battery.

3. Placement

Place the UPS in a location with adequate airflow, away from excessive heat, direct sunlight, and moisture. Ensure the unit is placed on a stable, flat surface. The dimensions of the unit are approximately 17.3 x 6.7 x 8.6 inches (43.9 cm x 17.0 cm x 21.8 cm).

4. Connecting to Power and Devices

Plug the UPS power cord (NEMA 5-15P) into a grounded 120V AC outlet. Connect your critical equipment (servers, networking devices, etc.) to the eight NEMA 5-15R output outlets on the rear of the UPS. Ensure that the total load does not exceed the UPS's capacity of 900W.

5. APC SmartConnect Setup

The APC SmartConnect feature allows for cloud-based remote monitoring of your UPS. To set up SmartConnect:

  1. Connect the UPS to your network using a dedicated Ethernet cable plugged into the "NETWORK" port on the rear panel.
  2. Locate the QR code on the UPS unit. Scan this QR code using a smartphone or tablet to automatically register your UPS with the SmartConnect web portal.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to create an account and complete the registration process.

Once registered, you can view UPS status, receive automatic notifications, and access support services from any internet-connected device. A 6-month free trial of the SmartConnect Standard plan is included for units purchased and/or registered after August 1, 2023.

Operating the UPS

Front Panel Display

The intuitive LCD interface on the front panel provides key status information at a glance. You can cycle through various display modes using the buttons below the screen.

  • Online Indicator: Shows when the UPS is operating on utility power.
  • Load Indicator: Displays the current load on the UPS, often shown as a percentage or in watts/VA.
  • Battery Status: Indicates the battery charge level and estimated runtime.
  • Output Voltage: Shows the current output voltage (e.g., 120V).
  • Mute Button: Silences audible alarms.
  • Display Button: Cycles through different information screens on the LCD.

Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR)

The UPS features Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), which automatically adjusts high and low voltages to a safe level without using battery power. This helps preserve the life of the battery and protects connected equipment from voltage fluctuations.

Green Mode

The automatic green mode ensures the UPS operates at the highest levels of efficiency, reducing energy consumption and heat generation when utility power is stable.

Maintenance

Intelligent Battery Management

The UPS incorporates intelligent battery management, providing real-time monitoring and management through temperature-compensated charging. This technology prolongs battery life and performance.

  • Periodic Battery Self-Test: The UPS performs automatic self-tests to ensure the battery is functioning correctly.
  • Battery Replacement Recommendations: The system provides notifications when the battery is nearing the end of its useful life and requires replacement.

Cleaning

Regularly clean the exterior of the UPS with a dry cloth. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust and debris to maintain proper airflow and cooling.

Firmware Updates

Firmware updates are simplified through the APC SmartConnect portal, ensuring your UPS always has the latest features and security enhancements. Automatic notifications will inform you when updates are available.

The APC 1500VA Smart UPS comes with a 2-year repair or replace warranty for the unit (excluding battery) and a 2-year warranty for the battery. An additional 1 year of battery warranty is available when you connect and register this APC UPS with the SmartConnect App.
