Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your Okuma Babarian BN-55 fishing reel. Understanding these guidelines will ensure optimal performance and longevity of your equipment.
The Okuma Babarian BN-55 features a lightweight and corrosion-resistant graphite body and rotor, a reliable lever drag system with automatic return, and 2+1 stainless steel ball bearings for smooth operation. It includes a Quick-Set infinite anti-reverse system, a machined brass pinion gear, and both a machined aluminum spool and an additional graphite spool. The RES II computer-balanced rotor and perforated aluminum handle with a double grip enhance its functionality. The multi-disc drag system utilizes Japanese oiled felt for consistent drag performance.

Setup
- Attaching the Reel to a Fishing Rod:
Align the reel foot with the reel seat on your fishing rod. Secure the reel by tightening the locking nuts on the reel seat until the reel is firmly in place. Ensure there is no wobble.
- Spooling Fishing Line:
Open the bail arm. Thread the fishing line through the guides of your rod, starting from the tip. Tie the line to the spool using an arbor knot or a similar secure knot. Close the bail arm. With the rod assembled, begin winding the line onto the spool, maintaining light tension on the line to ensure even and tight winding. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch (3 mm) from the rim.
- Adjusting the Drag System:
The drag knob is located on the top of the spool. Turn the drag knob clockwise to increase drag tension and counter-clockwise to decrease it. Adjust the drag to approximately one-third of the line's breaking strength. This allows the line to pay out under heavy load, preventing line breakage.
- Handle Installation:
The Okuma Babarian BN-55 features an ambidextrous handle. Insert the handle shaft into the main gear housing and secure it by screwing the handle cap or locking screw clockwise until tight. To switch the handle to the opposite side, unscrew the handle cap, remove the handle, and reinsert it into the desired side, then re-secure the cap.

Operating Instructions
- Casting:
Hold the rod and reel comfortably. Open the bail arm with your non-dominant hand. Grip the line against the rod with your dominant hand's index finger. Swing the rod forward, releasing the line with your index finger at the peak of the forward motion. Close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle once the lure or bait hits the water.
- Retrieving Line:
Turn the handle clockwise to retrieve the line. The Quick-Set Anti-Reverse system prevents the handle from turning backward, ensuring solid hook sets and efficient retrieval.
- Bail Arm Operation:
The bail arm opens to allow line to cast freely and closes to engage the line for retrieval. Ensure the bail arm is fully open before casting to avoid line snags or damage.
- Using the Lever Drag System:
The Babarian BN-55 features a lever drag system. This allows for quick adjustments to drag pressure during a fight. Familiarize yourself with the lever's range of motion and how it affects drag tension before fishing.
Maintenance
- Cleaning After Use:
After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel. Use a soft cloth to wipe away any dirt, salt, or debris. Allow the reel to air dry completely before storage.
- Lubrication:
Periodically apply a small amount of high-quality reel grease to the main gear and pinion gear. Use a light reel oil on ball bearings, the bail arm pivot points, and the handle knobs. Avoid over-lubricating, as this can attract dirt and hinder performance.
- Storage:
Store your reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Consider using a reel cover or case to protect it from dust and physical damage.
Troubleshooting
- Line Tangles or Loops:
This can be caused by overfilling the spool, improper line winding, or using line that is too heavy or too light for the reel. Ensure the spool is filled correctly and check for any nicks or burrs on the spool lip or line roller.
- Stiff Retrieve:
A stiff retrieve can indicate a need for cleaning and lubrication, or the presence of debris within the gears. Disassemble the reel carefully (if comfortable) for cleaning, or consult a professional reel repair service.
- Drag Slipping or Inconsistent:
This often points to worn or contaminated drag washers. The Okuma Babarian BN-55 uses Japanese oiled felt washers; these may need cleaning or replacement if they become dry or saturated with foreign material. Ensure the drag knob is tightened correctly.
- Bail Arm Not Closing Properly:
Check for any obstructions or bent components in the bail arm mechanism. A spring might be worn or dislodged. Professional service may be required.
