FORENSICS DETECTORS FD FD-CAR001

FORENSICS DETECTORS FD-CAR001 Carbon Monoxide Detector User Manual

Model: FD-CAR001

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper use, maintenance, and safety of your FORENSICS DETECTORS FD-CAR001 Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector. This device is designed to detect low levels of carbon monoxide in environments such as vehicles, aircraft, and other small enclosed spaces. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the device.

2. Safety Information

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be fatal. This detector is designed to provide an early warning of CO presence. However, it is not a substitute for proper maintenance of combustion appliances or ventilation systems. Always follow these safety guidelines:

  • Do not place the detector in direct sunlight or in areas where temperatures exceed 122°F (50°C), as this may affect its performance.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in any enclosed space where combustion appliances are used.
  • Regularly test the detector as per instructions.
  • Do not obstruct the sensor opening.
  • This detector is specifically designed for small spaces like vehicles and aircraft. It is not intended for residential use, which typically requires different alarm thresholds and sound levels.

3. Product Overview

The FD-CAR001 is a compact and portable carbon monoxide detector featuring a digital display and multiple alarm indicators.

Key Features:

  • Digital CO concentration display (0-1000ppm)
  • Low-level alarm at 9ppm (visual LED)
  • Higher-level alarm at 25ppm (visual LED and audible buzzer)
  • MAX CO level memory function
  • Battery-powered for continuous operation (8-12 months)
  • Compact and lightweight design (2oz)
  • Easy one-button operation

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The FD-CAR001 comes with two CR2032 lithium metal batteries pre-installed and ready for use. No initial battery installation is required.

4.2 Mounting the Detector

The detector includes a plastic clip with a 3M stick-on mount for attachment to a surface. Ensure the mounting surface is clean and dry before application.

To attach:

  1. Peel off the protective film from the 3M adhesive on the back of the plastic clip.
  2. Press the clip firmly onto the desired clean, dry surface.
  3. Slide the detector into the clip.

To remove the detector from the clip: Gently slide the detector out of the clip. This may be slightly stiff initially but will become easier with practice.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off

  • To Turn On: Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds. The display will show "CAL" (calibration) for approximately 3 minutes. After calibration, a short beep will sound, and the display will show the current CO reading (typically 0 ppm in fresh air).
  • To Turn Off: Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds until the display goes blank.

The detector is designed for continuous operation. You can leave it on for extended periods (8-12 months on a single set of batteries).

5.2 Reading the Display

The digital display continuously shows the current carbon monoxide concentration in parts per million (ppm). It also displays a battery level indicator.

5.3 Viewing Maximum CO Level (MAX Function)

  • To view the highest CO level detected since the last reset: Briefly press and release the power button. The blue "MAX" LED will illuminate, and the maximum CO level will be displayed for 5 seconds before returning to the current reading.
  • This action does not reset the MAX level.

5.4 Resetting Maximum CO Level

To clear the stored maximum CO level and set it back to zero:

  1. Turn off the detector by holding the power button for 3 seconds.
  2. Turn the detector back on by holding the power button for 3 seconds.
  3. Wait for the 3-minute calibration cycle to complete. The MAX level will be reset.

6. Alarm Information

The FD-CAR001 features two distinct alarm levels to alert users to the presence of carbon monoxide:

  • 9 ppm LED Alarm: If the CO concentration continuously reaches or exceeds 9 ppm for at least 60 seconds, the bright red LED light will begin to blink. The display will show the actual CO level.
  • 25 ppm Buzzer Alarm: If the CO concentration continuously reaches or exceeds 25 ppm for at least 60 seconds, the audible buzzer will sound in addition to the blinking red LED. This provides a more urgent alert.

These alarm thresholds are designed to meet recommended exposure levels by organizations such as WHO, EPA, ASHRAE, OSHA, and NIOSH for low-level CO detection in specific environments.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Battery Replacement

When the battery level is low, the unit will emit a "beep beep" sound every 30 seconds. Replace the two CR2032 button batteries promptly to ensure continuous operation.

7.2 End-of-Life

All CO detectors have a limited lifespan due to the nature of their sensors. The FD-CAR001 has an end-of-life date, typically indicated on a sticker on the back of the unit (e.g., 2.5 years from manufacturing date). After this date, the sensor may no longer provide reliable readings, and the unit should be replaced.
