3. Setup and Preparation

3.1 Environmental Conditions

For best results, apply paint at 65°F (18°C) or higher and with 50% or less humidity. Avoid applying paint in direct sunlight, high humidity, or where silicone waxes and tire dressings are present.

3.2 Test Panel Application

Before applying to the vehicle, spray a test panel with the base coat and clear coat. This allows you to compare color match and coverage. Ensure the color matches your vehicle's existing paint. If you are new to automotive touch-up, search online video platforms for "aerosol auto touchup" tutorials.

3.3 Surface Cleaning

Thoroughly clean the area to be repaired with dish soap and water. Dry the surface completely. Use a prep solvent and a clean, lint-free towel to ensure the surface is free of wax, oil, and other contaminants.

3.4 Sanding

  • For Rust, Scratches, or Surface Damage: Sand the affected area with 180-320 grit sandpaper. The primer will cover these scratches.
  • For Painting Area: Use 600 wet sandpaper to sand the area you intend to paint.
  • For Blend Panel: Wet sand the blend panel (the area that might be painted and clear coated) with 1000-1500 grit wet sandpaper. The entire area to be painted should appear dull and smooth.
  • For New Plastic Parts: Lightly scuff the area with a grey fine scuff pad.
  • For New Metal Parts: Lightly use a medium scuff pad for top coating with solid colors, or a fine scuff pad for metallic and pearl finishes.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 General Application Tips

  • Shake each can vigorously for at least one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Continue shaking periodically during application.
  • Hold the can approximately 8-12 inches from the surface.
  • Apply paint in thin, even coats using a steady, sweeping motion. Overlap each pass by about 50%.
  • Allow appropriate flash-off time between coats as specified on the can label.

4.2 Primer Application

Apply 2-3 light coats of primer to the prepared surface. Allow 5-10 minutes flash-off time between coats. The primer provides a uniform base for the base coat and helps with adhesion.

4.3 Base Coat Application (Color)

Apply thin, even coats of the Nissan B42 Blue base coat. Allow 10-15 minutes flash-off time between coats, or until the paint appears dull. Continue applying coats until desired coverage and color match are achieved. Avoid applying heavy coats to prevent runs.

4.4 Clear Coat Application

Once the base coat has dried to a dull finish (typically 30-60 minutes after the last base coat), apply 2-3 medium wet coats of clear coat. Allow 10-15 minutes flash-off time between clear coats. The clear coat provides gloss and protection. Do not apply clear coat too heavily to avoid runs.

4.5 Using the Spare Nozzle

An extra nozzle is included in your kit. If the primary nozzle becomes clogged or damaged, replace it with the spare nozzle. To replace, carefully pull off the old nozzle and firmly press the new nozzle onto the valve stem.

5. Maintenance

To prevent clogging, after each use, invert the can and spray until only clear propellant comes out. This clears the nozzle of paint. Wipe the nozzle clean with a cloth. Store cans upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Clogged Nozzle: If the nozzle clogs, remove it and clean it with paint thinner or replace it with the spare nozzle provided.
  • Runs or Sags: This usually occurs from applying paint too heavily or holding the can too close. Apply thinner, more even coats. If a run occurs, allow it to dry completely, then sand smooth with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 1500-2000 grit) before reapplying.
  • Poor Coverage/Uneven Color: Ensure the surface was properly prepared and sanded. Apply additional thin coats, allowing proper flash-off time between each. Ensure cans were shaken thoroughly before and during use.
  • Poor Adhesion: This can be caused by improper surface cleaning (wax, oil, silicone residue) or insufficient sanding. Ensure the surface is meticulously clean and properly scuffed.
