Raychem FrostGuard 120V Pipe Freeze Protection Cable - 24 ft (Model P000002025)

Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the safe and effective use of the Raychem FrostGuard 120V Pipe Freeze Protection Cable, Model P000002025. This preassembled heating cable is designed to prevent water pipes from freezing and to avoid costly repairs associated with burst pipes. It is suitable for use on both metal and plastic pipes up to 2.5 inches in diameter.

The FrostGuard cable features self-regulating technology, which means it automatically adjusts its heat output based on ambient temperature, ensuring energy efficiency and preventing overheating, even when overlapped. The 120V FrostGuard kits include a lighted plug for easy power indication.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Read all instructions carefully before installation and operation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.

  • Always connect the FrostGuard heating cable to a Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protected electrical supply. A 30-mA equipment or 5-mA personnel ground-fault protection device must be used on each FrostGuard heating cable branch circuit.
  • Do not cut, splice, or alter the heating cable. The cable is preassembled and designed for specific lengths.
  • Ensure the cable is not damaged before installation. Do not install if the cable insulation is cut or frayed.
  • Do not use the cable in areas where it may be subjected to mechanical damage or excessive bending.
  • The cable must be covered with at least 1/2 inch (13 mm) of non-flammable thermal insulation after installation on the pipe.
  • Do not wrap the cable around itself excessively or in tight coils, as this can cause localized overheating. The self-regulating nature minimizes this risk but proper installation is still crucial.
  • Keep children and pets away from the installed cable.
  • Disconnect power before performing any maintenance or inspection.
  • Consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure about any part of the electrical installation.

3. Setup & Installation

The Raychem FrostGuard cable is designed for easy installation. Follow these steps for proper setup:

3.1 Preparation

  • Ensure the pipe surface is clean and dry before applying the heating cable.
  • Determine the length of pipe to be protected. This 24-foot cable is suitable for pipes up to 24 feet in length, or shorter lengths if spiraled.
  • Gather necessary tools: electrical tape (weather-resistant), pipe insulation, and possibly plastic ties for securing the cable.

3.2 Cable Application on Pipes

The cable can be applied straight along the pipe or spiraled for increased heat output on larger diameter pipes or in colder environments.

  1. Straight Application: For most standard pipes, run the cable straight along the bottom of the pipe. Secure it every 12 inches (30 cm) with electrical tape or plastic ties.
  2. Spiraled Application: For pipes with an outside diameter up to 2.5 inches, or in extremely cold conditions, spiral the cable around the pipe. Ensure the cable does not overlap itself tightly. Maintain a minimum spacing of 1 inch (2.5 cm) between cable runs if possible.
  3. Valves and Fittings: For valves, spigots, and other fittings, loop extra cable around them to ensure adequate heat coverage. Do not create sharp bends in the cable.

3.3 Insulation

After securing the heating cable, cover the entire pipe and cable assembly with at least 1/2 inch (13 mm) of non-flammable thermal insulation. This is crucial for energy efficiency and proper operation of the FrostGuard system. Ensure the insulation is weather-resistant and sealed to prevent moisture ingress.

3.4 Electrical Connection

  • Plug the preassembled lighted plug into a standard 120V GFCI-protected electrical outlet.
  • The lighted plug will illuminate when power is supplied, indicating that the cable is active.
  • Ensure the outlet is protected from weather and moisture. Use a weatherproof enclosure if necessary.

4. Operation

The Raychem FrostGuard cable operates automatically due to its self-regulating properties. When the ambient temperature drops to a level where freezing is a risk, the cable's core material increases its heat output. As the temperature rises, the heat output decreases, making it energy-efficient.

  • Once plugged into a GFCI-protected outlet, the cable will begin to operate as needed.
  • The lighted plug serves as a visual indicator that the cable is receiving power.
  • No manual adjustments are required for temperature control.

5. Maintenance

The Raychem FrostGuard heating cable is designed to be maintenance-free. However, periodic inspection is recommended to ensure continued safe and effective operation.

  • Annual Inspection: Before the onset of freezing temperatures each year, inspect the entire length of the cable and its insulation.
  • Check for any visible damage to the cable, such as cuts, abrasions, or kinks.
  • Ensure the pipe insulation is intact and securely covering the cable. Repair or replace damaged insulation.
  • Verify that the plug and outlet are free from corrosion or damage.
  • Test the GFCI outlet by pressing the "TEST" button. The outlet should trip, cutting power. Press "RESET" to restore power. If the GFCI does not trip, it should be replaced by a qualified electrician.
  • Do not attempt to repair the heating cable itself. If damaged, the entire cable should be replaced.

6. Troubleshooting

If your FrostGuard cable is not functioning as expected, refer to the following troubleshooting guide:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Cable not heating / Lighted plug offNo power to the outlet.
GFCI tripped.
Faulty outlet.
Check circuit breaker.
Reset GFCI. If it trips immediately, there may be a fault in the circuit or cable.
Test outlet with another device. Consult electrician if outlet is faulty.
Pipes still freezingInsufficient insulation.
Cable not properly installed (e.g., not enough cable on valves).
Cable length too short for pipe.
Extremely low temperatures exceeding cable capacity.
Add more or better quality insulation (minimum 1/2 inch).
Re-inspect cable application, especially around fittings.
Ensure correct cable length was chosen for the pipe.
Consider additional measures for extreme cold, such as higher R-value insulation or a longer cable if applicable.
GFCI trips repeatedlyDamage to heating cable.
Moisture ingress into plug or cable.
Faulty GFCI outlet.
Unplug cable and inspect for visible damage. If damaged, replace the cable.
Ensure plug and outlet are dry and protected from weather.
Test GFCI with another device. Replace GFCI if faulty.

If troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, contact customer support or a qualified professional.
