Welcome to the Soundcraft Notepad-12FX user manual. This document provides detailed instructions for setting up, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting your 12-channel analog mixing console. The Notepad-12FX combines professional-grade audio mixing with an integrated USB audio interface and studio-quality Lexicon effects, making it ideal for various applications including live sound, home recording, and podcasting.

2. Setup
2.1 Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully remove the mixer from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage that may have occurred during transit. Retain the packaging for future transport or storage.
2.2 Power Connection
Connect the supplied power adapter to the DC input on the rear of the Notepad-12FX and then to a suitable AC power outlet. Ensure the power adapter specifications match your local power supply.
2.3 Input Connections
The Notepad-12FX offers a variety of input options:
- Microphone/Line Inputs (Channels 1-4): Use XLR connectors for microphones or 1/4" TRS/TS jacks for line-level instruments and devices.
- Hi-Z Input: Channel 1 features a Hi-Z switch for direct connection of high-impedance instruments like electric guitars or basses.
- 48V Phantom Power: Press the 48V button to supply phantom power to condenser microphones connected to XLR inputs. Ensure microphones are compatible before engaging phantom power.
- Stereo Line Inputs (Channels 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12): Use 1/4" TRS/TS jacks for stereo line-level sources. Channels 9/10 also feature RCA inputs.

2.4 Output Connections
- Main Outputs (MASTER L/R): Connect these XLR outputs to your main PA system or studio monitors.
- AUX Output: Use the 1/4" TRS jack to send a monitor mix to stage monitors or external effects processors.
- Headphone Output: Connect your headphones to the 1/4" TRS jack for personal monitoring.
2.5 USB Audio Interface Setup
The Notepad-12FX features a 4-in/4-out USB audio interface:
- Mac Users: The Notepad-12FX is class-compliant with Mac operating systems. Simply connect the mixer to your Mac via a USB cable, and it will be recognized automatically.
- Windows Users: Before connecting the mixer, download and install the latest USB drivers from the official Soundcraft website. Follow the on-screen instructions for installation. After installation, connect the mixer via USB.
- Software Configuration: In your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) or audio settings, select the Notepad-12FX as your audio input and output device.
3. Operating the Mixer

3.1 Channel Strip Controls
Each input channel features a set of controls to shape your sound:
- GAIN: Adjusts the input sensitivity for the connected microphone or instrument. Set this to achieve a strong signal without clipping (indicated by the PK LED).
- EQ (TREBLE, MID, BASS): These knobs allow you to boost or cut specific frequency ranges to enhance or correct the sound of each input.
- AUX/FX: Controls the amount of signal sent from the channel to the AUX output (for monitors) or the internal Lexicon effects processor.
- PAN/BAL: Positions the channel's signal within the stereo field (left to right).
- LEVEL: Adjusts the overall volume of the channel in the main mix.

3.2 Lexicon Effects
The Notepad-12FX includes a built-in Lexicon effects engine:
- FX SELECT: Use this knob to choose from various reverb, echo, and delay effects.
- PARAMETER: Adjusts a specific parameter of the selected effect (e.g., decay time for reverb, delay time for echo).
- TAP TEMPO: Press this button repeatedly to set the tempo for time-based effects like delay.
- FX LEVEL: Controls the overall volume of the effects return in the main mix.

3.3 USB Audio Interface Operation
The integrated USB interface allows for seamless recording and playback:
- Recording: The mixer can send up to 4 channels of audio to your computer. The specific routing options can be configured via the Soundcraft control panel software (for Windows) or your DAW's input settings.
- Playback: Audio from your computer can be routed back to the mixer for playback through the main outputs or headphones.
3.4 Master Section
- MASTER FADER: Controls the overall output volume of the main mix.
- HEADPHONE LEVEL: Adjusts the volume of the headphone output.
- LED Meters: Provide visual feedback on the output level of the main mix. Aim for levels that are strong but do not consistently peak into the red.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning
To clean the mixer, use a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner can be used, ensuring no liquid enters the unit. Avoid harsh chemicals or solvents.
4.2 Environmental Considerations
Operate and store the Notepad-12FX in a clean, dry environment away from extreme temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight. Avoid placing heavy objects on the mixer or obstructing its ventilation.
4.3 Firmware Updates
Periodically check the official Soundcraft website for any available firmware updates. Firmware updates can improve performance, add features, or resolve issues. Follow the instructions provided with the update carefully.
5. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Notepad-12FX, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Sound Output:
- Ensure the mixer is powered on and connected correctly.
- Check all cable connections (inputs, outputs, power).
- Verify channel LEVEL knobs and the MASTER FADER are turned up.
- Confirm that the connected speakers/headphones are powered on and their volume is adjusted.
- If using USB, check your computer's audio settings and DAW input/output selections.
- Distorted Audio:
- Reduce the GAIN knob on the input channel if the PK (Peak) LED is frequently lighting up.
- Lower the channel LEVEL or MASTER FADER if the main output meters are consistently in the red.
- Check for damaged cables.
- USB Connection Issues:
- For Windows users, ensure the correct drivers are installed.
- Try a different USB port or cable.
- Restart your computer and the mixer.
- Phantom Power Not Working:
- Ensure the 48V button is engaged and its LED is lit.
- Verify your microphone requires and is compatible with phantom power.
- Effects Not Audible:
- Increase the AUX/FX send on the desired channel.
- Adjust the FX LEVEL knob in the master section.
- Ensure an effect is selected using the FX SELECT knob.
