Figure 1: La Crosse Technology WS6836 Weather Station and Outdoor Sensor. The main unit features a large, colored LCD screen displaying indoor temperature (27°C), indoor humidity (57%), outdoor temperature (25°C), outdoor humidity (56%), weather forecast icons (sun and clouds), barometric pressure history, current pressure (995 hPa), moon phase, and current date/time (Sunday, January 06, 10:01). The white wireless outdoor sensor is shown on the left.
3.1 Main Unit Features
- Large color LCD display
- Indoor temperature and humidity display
- Outdoor temperature and humidity display
- Weather forecast icons (sunny, partly cloudy, cloudy, rainy, stormy)
- Barometric pressure history graph
- Moon phase display
- Time and date display with radio-controlled clock (RCC)
- Alarm function
3.2 Outdoor Sensor Features
- Measures outdoor temperature and humidity
- Wireless transmission to the main unit (433 MHz)
- Transmission range up to 90 meters (300 ft) in open air
4. Setup
4.1 Powering the Main Unit
- Connect the provided power adapter to the main unit's power input jack.
- Plug the power adapter into a standard electrical outlet. The display will illuminate and begin its initial setup sequence.
4.2 Installing Batteries in the Outdoor Sensor
- Open the battery compartment on the back of the outdoor sensor.
- Insert 2x AA batteries (not included) according to the polarity markings (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment securely. The sensor will begin transmitting data.
4.3 Sensor Placement
- Place the outdoor sensor in a shaded area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, to ensure accurate temperature readings.
- Ensure the sensor is protected from direct rain and moisture.
- Position the sensor within the 90-meter (300 ft) wireless range of the main unit, minimizing obstructions like thick walls or metal objects.
4.4 Initial Setup and Synchronization
After powering on both units, the main unit will automatically search for the outdoor sensor and attempt to synchronize with the radio-controlled clock (RCC) signal. This process may take several minutes. Ensure both units are within range during this initial setup.
- The outdoor temperature and humidity should appear on the main unit's display once synchronized.
- The time and date will automatically set once the RCC signal is received. If the signal is weak, manual time setting may be required initially.
5. Operating the Weather Station
5.1 Display Overview
The color LCD display is divided into several sections, providing a clear overview of current weather conditions and time information. Refer to Figure 1 for visual reference.
- Indoor Section: Displays indoor temperature (e.g., 27°C) and humidity (e.g., 57%).
- Outdoor Section: Displays outdoor temperature (e.g., 25°C) and humidity (e.g., 56%).
- Weather Forecast: Shows animated icons representing the predicted weather conditions (e.g., sun, clouds).
- Barometric Pressure History: A bar graph illustrating pressure changes over the last 24 hours, along with the current pressure value (e.g., 995 hPa).
- Moon Phase: Indicates the current phase of the moon.
- Time and Date: Displays the current time (e.g., 10:01) and date (e.g., January 06, Sunday).
5.2 Time and Date Settings
The weather station automatically synchronizes time and date via the RCC signal. If manual adjustment is needed:
- Press and hold the "SET" button (location varies by model, typically on the back or side) to enter time setting mode.
- Use the "+" or "-" buttons to adjust values (e.g., hour, minute, year, month, day).
- Press "SET" again to confirm each setting and move to the next.
- Select 12 or 24-hour format and language (English, French, Spanish).
- Adjust time zone if necessary (e.g., for Germany's atomic clock, set to 0 for Central European Time).
5.3 Temperature and Humidity Display
- The unit displays indoor and outdoor temperatures in either Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F).
- To switch between °C and °F, press the dedicated button (often labeled "°C/°F" or similar).
- The station records daily minimum and maximum temperatures and humidity. These can typically be viewed by pressing a "MIN/MAX" button.
5.4 Weather Forecast
The weather forecast is based on changes in barometric pressure. The station displays 6 different weather symbols, which may change color automatically depending on the season (foreground season feature).
5.5 Barometric Pressure
The barometric pressure graph shows the trend over the last 24 hours. The current pressure is displayed in hPa or inHg. The unit may allow calibration of the pressure reading if needed.
5.6 Moon Phases
The moon phase display automatically updates to show the current lunar phase.
5.7 Alarms
The weather station includes an alarm function. Refer to the specific button labels on your device (e.g., "ALARM") to set and activate alarms for time or temperature thresholds.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Battery Replacement
- A low battery indicator will appear on the display for both the main unit (if using backup batteries) and the outdoor sensor.
- For the outdoor sensor, replace the 2x AA batteries as described in Section 4.2.
- Dispose of old batteries responsibly.
6.2 Cleaning
- Wipe the main unit and outdoor sensor with a soft, damp cloth.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the display or casing.
6.3 Sensor Care
- Periodically check the outdoor sensor for debris or obstructions that might affect its readings.
- Ensure the sensor remains in a protected location to prolong its lifespan.
