Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective installation, operation, and maintenance of your TrueCut Chainsaw Chain. This aftermarket replacement chain is designed for compatibility with various Makita chainsaw models, including DC8350S, DC8390, 501GNB, 5011B, 5012B, 5014B, and 5016B. Please read this manual thoroughly before use to ensure proper handling and to maximize the lifespan of your chain.
The TrueCut chain features a 3/8" LP pitch, .05" gauge, 52 drive links, dual raker design, and a semi-chisel cutting profile for efficient wood cutting with reduced kickback.
Important Safety Information
WARNING: Chainsaws are dangerous tools that can cause severe injury or death if not used properly. Always follow the safety guidelines provided by your chainsaw manufacturer in addition to these chain-specific instructions.
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including a helmet, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and chainsaw protective trousers/chaps.
- Ensure the chainsaw is turned off and the spark plug cap is disconnected (for gas models) or the battery is removed (for electric models) before performing any maintenance or chain replacement.
- Inspect the chain, guide bar, and sprocket for damage or wear before each use. Replace worn or damaged components immediately.
- Maintain proper chain tension. A loose chain can derail and cause injury; an overly tight chain can cause premature wear and damage.
- Be aware of kickback and take precautions to avoid it.
- Keep bystanders, especially children and pets, away from the work area.
Setup: Chain Installation
Follow these steps to safely install your new TrueCut chainsaw chain:
- Prepare the Chainsaw: Ensure the chainsaw is off, the engine is cool, and the spark plug cap is disconnected or battery removed. Engage the chain brake.
- Remove Guide Bar Cover: Loosen and remove the nuts holding the guide bar cover in place. Carefully remove the cover.
- Remove Old Chain and Guide Bar: Remove the old chain from the sprocket and guide bar. Then, remove the guide bar itself.
- Clean Components: Clean any sawdust, debris, or old oil from the sprocket, guide bar groove, and guide bar mounting area.
- Install New Chain: Place the new TrueCut chain onto the sprocket, ensuring the cutting edges (rakers) are facing the correct direction (usually forward, away from the chainsaw body, on the top of the guide bar).
- Mount Guide Bar: Slide the guide bar onto the mounting studs, ensuring the chain fits into the guide bar groove. The chain tensioner pin should align with the hole in the guide bar.
- Replace Guide Bar Cover: Reinstall the guide bar cover and hand-tighten the nuts. Do not fully tighten yet.
- Adjust Chain Tension: Using the chain tensioning screw (typically located on the side of the chainsaw or on the guide bar cover), adjust the chain tension. The chain should be snug against the guide bar, but you should be able to pull the chain freely around the guide bar with gloved hands. There should be no slack on the underside of the guide bar, and the drive links should not come out of the guide bar groove.
- Final Tightening: While holding the tip of the guide bar up, fully tighten the guide bar nuts.
- Check Tension Again: After tightening, re-check the chain tension. It may change slightly. Adjust if necessary.

Operating Instructions
Once the TrueCut chain is correctly installed and tensioned, you can operate your chainsaw according to its manufacturer's instructions. Remember these chain-specific considerations:
- Lubrication: Ensure your chainsaw's automatic oiler is functioning correctly and filled with appropriate bar and chain oil. Proper lubrication is critical for chain performance and longevity.
- Break-in Period: New chains may stretch slightly during the first few uses. Frequently check and adjust chain tension during the initial break-in period (first 30 minutes of operation).
- Cutting Technique: Always use proper cutting techniques to avoid kickback and ensure efficient cutting. Do not force the chain; let the chain do the work.
- Avoid Contact with Ground/Obstacles: Do not allow the chain to contact soil, rocks, or metal objects, as this will dull the chain quickly and can cause damage.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance extends the life of your TrueCut chainsaw chain and ensures safe operation.
Chain Sharpening
A sharp chain cuts efficiently and safely. Sharpen your chain regularly, or whenever you notice it cutting slowly, producing fine dust instead of chips, or pulling to one side.
- Use a round file of the correct diameter for a 3/8" LP pitch chain (typically 5/32" or 4.0mm).
- File each cutter at the correct angle (usually 30-35 degrees) and depth. Maintain consistent angles and strokes for all cutters.
- Check and file the depth gauges (rakers) as needed.
- Consider using a chain sharpening guide or having it professionally sharpened.
Chain Tension
Check chain tension frequently, especially during the first hour of use and before each cutting session. Adjust as described in the "Setup" section.
Cleaning and Storage
- After each use, clean the chain and guide bar to remove sap, sawdust, and debris.
- If storing for an extended period, clean the chain thoroughly, lubricate it with bar and chain oil, and store it in a dry place to prevent rust.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Chain cuts slowly or produces dust | Dull chain, incorrect sharpening angle, worn depth gauges. | Sharpen the chain. Ensure correct file size and angle. Adjust depth gauges. |
| Chain pulls to one side | Unevenly sharpened cutters, damaged guide bar groove. | Resharpen chain evenly. Inspect and replace guide bar if damaged. |
| Chain derails frequently | Loose chain tension, worn guide bar, worn sprocket, incorrect chain size. | Adjust chain tension. Inspect and replace guide bar or sprocket if worn. Ensure correct chain pitch and gauge. |
| Chain overheats or smokes | Insufficient lubrication, overly tight chain, dull chain. | Check bar oil level and oiler function. Adjust chain tension. Sharpen chain. |
