Components Included

The EMSCO Group Rescue 50 Gallon Whiskey Rain Barrel system includes the following components:

  • 50 Gallon Whiskey Barrel with integrated planter
  • Rainwater Diverter
  • 36 inch Tubing
  • Barb Plug
  • 48 inch Main Hose
  • Ball Cock with On/Off Control Downspout
  • 2 Hose Gaskets

Setup and Installation

Proper installation ensures efficient water collection and system longevity. Refer to the included diverter installation guide for detailed steps.

  1. Location Selection: Choose a stable, level surface near a downspout (2 in. x 3 in. or 3 in. x 4 in.) that receives adequate rainfall. The flat-back design allows the barrel to sit closely against a house or outdoor building.
  2. Diverter Installation: Install the provided rainwater diverter into your downspout according to the specific instructions in the diverter installation guide. Ensure the diverter is positioned correctly to direct water into the barrel.
  3. Connect Tubing and Hose: Connect the 36-inch tubing and 48-inch main hose from the diverter to the rain barrel's inlet. Secure connections with the provided hose gaskets.
  4. Install Spigot: Attach the ball cock with on/off control spigot to the designated outlet on the barrel. Ensure it is tightly secured to prevent leaks.
  5. Planter Preparation: If using the integrated planter, ensure the weep holes are clear to allow for proper drainage.

Operation

Once installed, the rain barrel operates automatically to collect rainwater.

  • Water Collection: Rainwater flowing down your downspout will be diverted into the barrel until it reaches its 50-gallon capacity.
  • Overflow Management: The diverter system automatically sends any excess water back through your downspout once the barrel is full, preventing overflow.
  • Water Dispensing: Use the integrated spigot to access collected rainwater for watering plants, gardens, or other outdoor needs. The spigot has an on/off control for easy use.
  • Soaker Hose Connection: The rain barrel can be connected to a soaker hose for convenient automatic watering of nearby plants.
  • Integrated Planter Use: The top planter can be used for decorative plants. Water from the barrel can be used to water these plants, or they can benefit from direct rainfall. Ensure weep holes remain clear for drainage.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and efficiency of your rain barrel system.

  • Regular Cleaning: Periodically inspect the inside of the barrel for sediment buildup. If necessary, drain the barrel and rinse it out.
  • Diverter Inspection: Check the diverter and connecting hoses for any debris, leaves, or blockages that might impede water flow. Clear any obstructions.
  • Weep Hole Clearance: Ensure the weep holes in the integrated planter remain clear to prevent water accumulation and root rot.
  • Winterization: Before freezing temperatures arrive, completely drain the rain barrel and disconnect it from the downspout diverter. Store the barrel in a sheltered location or invert it to prevent water from collecting and freezing, which can cause damage.
