Product Overview
The Brennenstuhl MD Moisture Detector features a robust design for reliable measurements. Below is an illustration of the device and its key components.

Figure 1: Brennenstuhl MD Moisture Detector. This image shows the device with its protective cap removed, revealing the two sharp measuring pins at the top. The digital display shows "19.8%" and various icons indicating battery level and measurement mode. Below the display are two buttons: a power button and a mode selection button. The device has a yellow and dark gray casing with an ergonomic grip.
- Protective Cap: Covers the measuring pins when not in use.
- Measuring Pins: Two sharp pins for penetrating material to measure moisture.
- LCD Display: Shows moisture percentage, battery status, and selected material mode.
- Power Button: Turns the device on and off.
- Mode Button: Toggles between wood and building material measurement modes.
- Battery Compartment: Located on the back (not visible in Figure 1).
Setup
Before first use, install the batteries.
Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
- Slide or unclip the cover to open it.

Operating Instructions
Powering On/Off
- To turn on: Press the Power Button (labeled with a universal power symbol, refer to Figure 1). The display will illuminate.
- To turn off: Press and hold the Power Button for a few seconds. The device also features an automatic shut-off function after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.
Selecting Measurement Mode
The device can measure moisture in two main categories: wood and building materials.
- Press the Mode Button (labeled with an icon representing material types, refer to Figure 1) to toggle between the wood mode (often indicated by a tree or wood icon) and building material mode (often indicated by a brick or wall icon).
- Ensure the correct mode is selected for the material you are testing to obtain accurate readings.
Taking Measurements
- Remove the protective cap from the measuring pins.
- Gently but firmly press the measuring pins into the surface of the material you wish to test. Ensure both pins penetrate the material.
- Read the moisture percentage displayed on the LCD screen.
- Withdraw the pins from the material.
- Replace the protective cap after use to prevent damage to the pins and accidental injury.

Figure 3: Brennenstuhl MD Moisture Detector with protective cap in place. This image shows the device in its stored or transport configuration, with the dark gray protective cap securely covering the measuring pins. This view emphasizes the compact and portable nature of the moisture detector.
Interpreting Readings
The displayed percentage indicates the moisture content of the material. Refer to industry standards or material-specific guidelines for acceptable moisture levels. Generally:
- Wood: Typical dry wood moisture content is between 6% and 12%. Higher readings may indicate dampness or insufficient drying.
- Building Materials: Acceptable moisture levels vary greatly depending on the material (e.g., concrete, plaster, drywall). Consult relevant building codes or material specifications for accurate interpretation.
Maintenance
Cleaning
- Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Ensure the measuring pins are clean and free of debris after each use.
Battery Replacement
- When the battery indicator on the display shows low power, replace the batteries promptly.
- Follow the battery installation steps outlined in the "Setup" section.
Storage
- Always replace the protective cap over the measuring pins before storing.
- Store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
Troubleshooting
