2. Safety Information

WARNING: Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
  • Ensure all guards and safety devices are in place and functioning correctly before operation.
  • Keep hands, feet, and clothing away from moving parts, especially the feed chute and discharge chute.
  • Never operate the chipper without the tractor's PTO shield and the chipper's PTO shaft guard properly installed.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the chipper during operation. Keep bystanders, children, and pets away from the work area.
  • Ensure the tractor is securely parked with the engine off and PTO disengaged before performing any adjustments, maintenance, or clearing jams.
  • Do not feed material larger than the specified capacity (4 inches).
  • Operate the chipper on level ground to prevent tipping.
  • Be aware of potential kickback when feeding branches.
  • Never attempt to clear a jam with the engine running or PTO engaged.

3. Setup and Assembly

The MCP BX42S chipper is shipped professionally crated. Careful unpacking and assembly are required.

3.1 Unpacking

  • Carefully remove the chipper from its wooden crate. Inspect for any shipping damage.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Pre-Operation Checklist

  • Ensure all safety guards are in place.
  • Check that all bolts and fasteners are tight.
  • Verify the PTO shaft is securely connected and lubricated.
  • Inspect the chipper blades for sharpness and damage.
  • Clear the work area of debris and ensure adequate space for discharge.

4.2 Starting the Chipper

  1. Start the tractor engine and allow it to warm up.
  2. Engage the tractor's PTO at a low RPM.
  3. Gradually increase the tractor's engine RPM until the chipper rotor reaches the recommended operating speed (540-1000 RPM).

4.3 Feeding Material

  • Feed branches and wood material into the hopper opening.
  • Feed material slowly and steadily. Do not force material into the chipper.
  • Avoid feeding material with excessive dirt, rocks, or metal, as this can damage the blades.
  • The chipper uses a gravity feed system. Allow the rotor to pull the material through.

  3. Reduce the tractor's engine RPM to idle.
  4. Disengage the PTO.
  5. Turn off the tractor engine and remove the key.
  6. Allow all moving parts to come to a complete stop before approaching the chipper.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of your chipper.

5.1 Blade Inspection and Replacement

  • Inspect the reversible hardened steel blades regularly for sharpness, nicks, or damage.
  • To access the blades, ensure the chipper is completely shut down and the PTO is disengaged.
  • The blades are reversible; when one edge becomes dull, they can be flipped to use the other edge.
  • Replace dull or damaged blades promptly. Always replace blades in sets to maintain rotor balance.
