2. Safety Information
Read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before operating the trolling motor. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, serious injury, or property damage.
- Battery Safety: Always connect the motor to a 12-volt deep cycle or marine battery. Ensure proper polarity (+ to + and - to -) to prevent damage to the motor and battery. Disconnect the battery when the motor is not in use or during maintenance.
- Propeller Safety: Keep hands, feet, and clothing clear of the propeller at all times, especially when the motor is connected to a power source. The propeller can cause serious injury.
- Water Safety: Never operate the motor out of water. Ensure the motor is fully submerged before activation. Avoid operating in areas with heavy weeds or debris that could foul the propeller.
- Electrical Safety: Do not modify the electrical wiring of the motor. Use only the recommended circuit breaker (50A manual reset circuit breaker included). Protect all electrical connections from water exposure.
- General Operation: Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) when operating any watercraft. Be aware of your surroundings and other vessels. Do not allow children to operate the motor unsupervised.
3. What's in the Box
Upon unpacking, verify that all components are present:
- Newport Kayak Series Electric Trolling Motor
- Owner's Manual (this document)
- 50A Manual Reset Circuit Breaker
- Propeller with Assembly Hardware
4. Setup
4.1 Propeller Installation
- Ensure the motor is disconnected from any power source.
- Align the propeller with the motor shaft. The 55lb thrust model uses a 3-blade propeller.
- Slide the propeller onto the shaft, ensuring the drive pin engages with the propeller slot.
- Secure the propeller with the provided washer and nut. Tighten firmly but do not overtighten.
4.2 Mounting the Motor
The Newport Kayak Series motor is designed for transom mounting. It features oversized tightening knobs for secure attachment.
- Position the motor's transom mount bracket onto the transom of your kayak or canoe. The mount is compatible with transoms up to 3.5 inches wide.
- Tighten the mounting clamps securely to prevent movement during operation.
- Adjust the shaft depth using the depth collar. The 24-inch fiberglass shaft allows for variable depth placement to optimize performance and avoid obstacles.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power On/Off and Speed Control
The motor features a telescoping handle with integrated speed control.
- To power on, rotate the handle to one of the forward or reverse speed settings.
- The motor offers 5 forward speeds and 3 reverse speeds. Adjust the speed by rotating the handle to the desired setting.
- To power off, rotate the handle to the "OFF" or "0" position.
5.2 Battery Indicator
A 5-LED battery indicator is located on the motor head, providing an approximate indication of the remaining battery charge. Monitor this indicator to avoid unexpected power loss.
- All 5 LEDs lit: Full charge.
- Fewer LEDs lit: Decreasing charge.
- 1 LED lit: Low charge, recharge battery soon.

6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your trolling motor.
- After Each Use:
- Rinse the motor thoroughly with fresh water, especially after saltwater use, to prevent corrosion.
- Inspect the propeller for any fishing line, weeds, or debris. Remove any obstructions.
- Check all electrical connections for tightness and signs of corrosion. Clean terminals if necessary.
- Periodic Maintenance:
- Inspect the propeller for nicks, cracks, or bends. Replace if damaged.
- Check the motor shaft and mount for any signs of wear or damage.
- Ensure the battery is properly charged and maintained according to the battery manufacturer's instructions.
- Storage: Store the motor in a dry, cool place when not in use. Disconnect the battery for long-term storage.
