Extech ET60

Extech ET60 Seven Range Voltage & Continuity Tester with NCV User Manual

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and effective operation of the Extech ET60 Seven Range Voltage & Continuity Tester with Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) detection. The ET60 is a versatile tool designed for electrical testing, featuring AC/DC voltage indication, continuity testing, and a built-in flashlight.

Please read this manual thoroughly before use and retain it for future reference.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Electrical testing can be hazardous. Always follow safety precautions to avoid injury or damage to the device.

  • Ensure the tester is in good working condition before each use.
  • Do not use the tester if it appears damaged or if the test leads are compromised.
  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses and insulated gloves.
  • Verify the tester's operation on a known live circuit before testing an unknown circuit.
  • The ET60 is rated for CAT III-600V. Do not exceed these voltage limits.
  • Do not attempt to repair or modify the device. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.

3. Product Overview

4. Setup and Battery Installation

The Extech ET60 requires 2 AAA batteries for operation. These are typically included with the device.

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the tester.
  2. Use a suitable tool (e.g., a small screwdriver) to open the battery compartment.
  3. Insert 2 AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Securely close the battery compartment cover.
  5. Test the unit by pressing the flashlight button or by performing a quick continuity check on a known circuit.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. AC Voltage Indication

The ET60 indicates AC voltage across seven ranges. When connected to an AC circuit, the corresponding LED(s) will illuminate.

  • Connect the red and black test leads to the points where AC voltage is to be measured.
  • The tester will vibrate, and the LEDs corresponding to the detected voltage range will light up.
  • AC voltage ranges: 24V, 120V, 208V, 240V, 277V, 480V, 600V.
  • AC bandwidth: 45 to 66Hz.

5.2. DC Voltage Indication

The ET60 indicates DC voltage across seven ranges. When connected to a DC circuit, the corresponding LED(s) will illuminate.

  • Connect the red and black test leads to the points where DC voltage is to be measured, observing polarity.
  • The tester will vibrate, and the LEDs corresponding to the detected voltage range will light up.
  • DC voltage ranges: 6V, 12V, 24V, 36V, 48V, 110V, 220V.

5.3. Continuity Test

The continuity test function checks for a complete electrical path between two points.

  • Ensure the circuit under test is de-energized before performing a continuity test.
  • Touch the red and black test leads to the two points you wish to test for continuity.
  • If continuity is detected, the tester will emit an audible beep and a visual alert (LED).

5.4. Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection

The NCV feature allows for quick detection of live AC voltage without direct contact with conductors.

  • Hold the NCV sensor tip (top of the tester) near the conductor or outlet you suspect is live.
  • If AC voltage (90 to 1000Vac) is detected, the NCV indicator will illuminate, and an audible alert may sound.
  • This feature is for preliminary detection and should be confirmed with direct contact voltage measurement.

5.5. Flashlight Function

The built-in flashlight assists in illuminating dark work areas.

  • Press the flashlight button (if present, or refer to device markings) to turn the flashlight on or off.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the tester with a dry, clean cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears or if the tester's performance degrades. Refer to Section 4 for battery installation.
  • Storage: Store the tester in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the test leads and housing for any signs of damage, cracks, or frayed insulation. Do not use a damaged tester.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Tester does not power on.Dead or incorrectly installed batteries.Replace batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
Inaccurate voltage readings.Low battery, damaged leads, or incorrect application.Replace batteries. Inspect leads for damage. Ensure proper contact with the circuit.
Continuity test fails on a known good circuit.Low battery, poor contact, or internal fault.Replace batteries. Ensure firm contact with test points. If problem persists, contact support.
NCV not detecting voltage.Voltage too low, shielded wire, or NCV sensor not positioned correctly.Ensure voltage is within 90-1000Vac range. Try different angles. Confirm with direct contact measurement.
