1. Introduction

The Teac AD-850 is a versatile home audio component combining a cassette deck, CD player, and USB recorder. It features a karaoke microphone input, allowing for recording and playback across various media formats. 2. Safety Information

4. Controls and Indicators

4.1 Front Panel

The front panel provides access to all primary functions. Key components include:

• Power Button: Turns the unit on/off.
• CD Tray: For inserting audio CDs.
• Cassette Deck: For inserting audio cassette tapes.
• USB Port: For connecting USB flash drives for playback and recording.
• Display: Shows track information, time, and operational status.
• Source Button: Selects input source (CD, USB, Tape, Line In).
• Recording Level Knob: Adjusts recording input level.
• Microphone Input (MIC): 6.3mm (1/4") mono phone jack for microphone connection.
• MIC Level Knob: Adjusts microphone input volume.
• Echo Mode Button: Activates/deactivates echo effect for microphone.
• Pitch Control: Adjusts playback speed for cassette tapes.

4.2 Rear Panel

4.3 Remote Control Unit (RC-1329)

The included remote control provides convenient operation from a distance. It duplicates most front panel controls and adds specific functions like program playback and folder navigation for USB.

5. Setup

5.1 Placement

Place the unit on a stable, level surface. Ensure sufficient space around the unit for proper ventilation (at least 10 cm on top and sides, 5 cm at the rear).

5.2 Connections

• Connecting to an Amplifier/Receiver: Use RCA audio cables to connect the LINE OUTPUT jacks on the AD-850's rear panel to an available audio input (e.g., "CD IN", "AUX IN") on your amplifier or receiver.
• Connecting External Audio Devices (Input): To record from an external source, connect its audio output to the LINE INPUT jacks on the AD-850's rear panel.
• Microphone Connection: Insert a 6.3mm (1/4") mono phone jack microphone into the MIC input on the front panel.

5.3 Power Connection

After all audio connections are made, connect the supplied AC power cord to the AC IN terminal on the rear panel of the unit, then plug the other end into a suitable wall outlet.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Basic Playback

1. Press the POWER button to turn on the unit.
2. Press the SOURCE button to select the desired playback source (CD, USB, or TAPE).
3. Insert the media (CD, USB flash drive, or cassette tape).
4. Press the PLAY button (►) for the selected source.

6.2 CD Player Operation

• Loading a CD: Press OPEN/CLOSE, place the CD on the tray with the label side up, then press OPEN/CLOSE again to close.
• Playback: Press PLAY (►).
• Pause: Press PAUSE (⏸). Press again to resume.
• Skip Tracks: Press SKIP FORWARD (▶▶) or SKIP BACKWARD (◀◀).
• Fast Forward/Rewind: Hold SKIP FORWARD or SKIP BACKWARD.
• Stop: Press STOP (■).
• Playback Modes: Use the remote control for Continuous, Shuffle, and Program playback.

6.3 Cassette Deck Operation

• Loading a Tape: Press the EJECT button to open the cassette door, insert the tape, and close the door.
• Playback: Press the PLAY (►) button for the tape deck.
• Fast Forward/Rewind: Press the FAST FORWARD (▶▶) or REWIND (◀◀) buttons.
• Pitch Control: Adjust the PITCH CONTROL knob to vary the playback speed (approx. +/-10%).

6.4 USB Playback and Recording

• USB Playback: Insert a USB flash drive into the front USB port. Select USB as the source. The unit will automatically detect and play MP3 files. Use navigation buttons to select tracks or folders.
• Recording to USB:
  1. Select the desired source (CD, TAPE, or LINE IN).
  2. Insert a USB flash drive.
  3. Press the RECORD button (●) for USB. The unit will enter record-standby mode.
  4. Adjust the REC LEVEL knob to set the recording volume.
  5. Start playback on the source device. The recording will begin automatically.
  6. Press STOP (■) to end recording.

  Note: When recording from CD to USB, the mic sound cannot be recorded. Recording from CD to USB is at 128Kbps MP3 format.

6.5 Microphone and Karaoke Function

• Connect a microphone to the MIC input.
• Adjust the MIC LEVEL knob to control microphone volume.
• Press the ECHO MODE button to apply an echo effect to the microphone sound.
• The microphone audio can be mixed with playback from CD, USB, or Tape, and can be recorded to cassette or USB flash drive.

7. Maintenance

• Cleaning the Unit: Wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
• Cassette Deck Maintenance: Regularly clean the tape heads, pinch rollers, and capstan with a cotton swab lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Demagnetize the tape heads periodically.
• CD Lens Cleaning: Do not attempt to clean the CD lens directly. Use a commercially available CD lens cleaner disc if necessary.
