Setup and Installation
WARNING: Before attempting any installation or maintenance, ensure that the power supply to the equipment is completely disconnected at the circuit breaker. Capacitors can store a significant electrical charge even after power is off. Always discharge the old capacitor safely before handling.
- Safety First: Turn off all power to the HVAC unit or motor at the main breaker. Wait several minutes for any residual charge to dissipate.
- Discharge Old Capacitor: Using a properly insulated screwdriver with an insulated handle, short the terminals of the old capacitor to safely discharge any remaining electrical energy. Avoid touching the terminals directly.
- Document Wiring: Take a clear photograph of the existing wiring connections to the old capacitor. Note which wires connect to the "HERM" (Hermetic/Compressor), "FAN", and "C" (Common) terminals.
- Remove Old Capacitor: Disconnect the wires from the old capacitor and carefully remove it from its mounting bracket.
- Install New Capacitor: Place the new TEMCo capacitor into the mounting bracket.
- Connect Wiring: Refer to your photograph and connect the wires to the corresponding terminals on the new capacitor. Ensure connections are secure. The TEMCo capacitor features 1/4" Quick Disconnect Terminals.
- Secure and Close: Ensure all wires are clear of moving parts and the capacitor is securely mounted. Close the electrical panel cover.
- Restore Power: Turn the power back on at the main breaker.

Operation
The TEMCo Dual Run Capacitor is a passive electrical component designed to assist in the starting and continuous running of electric motors, typically found in HVAC systems. Once correctly installed and wired, the capacitor operates automatically as part of the motor's electrical circuit. It stores and releases electrical energy to create a phase shift, which is essential for the efficient operation of split-phase and three-phase AC motors.
No user interaction is required for the capacitor's operation after installation. Its function is integral to the motor's performance, ensuring smooth startup and consistent running efficiency.
Maintenance
To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your TEMCo Dual Run Capacitor, periodic visual inspection is recommended. While these capacitors are designed for durability, environmental factors and operational stress can affect their lifespan.
- Visual Inspection: Annually, or if performance issues arise, visually inspect the capacitor. Look for signs of physical damage such as bulging at the top or bottom, leaks (oil residue), or discoloration. These are indicators of potential failure.
- Terminal Connections: Check the quick-disconnect terminals for corrosion or loose connections. Ensure all wires are securely attached. Loose connections can lead to overheating and premature failure.
- Cleanliness: Keep the area around the capacitor clean and free from dust and debris, which can contribute to overheating.
- Replacement: If any signs of damage or degradation are observed, or if the motor exhibits symptoms of a failing capacitor (e.g., humming but not starting, fan not spinning), consider replacing the capacitor. Refer to the "Setup and Installation" section for replacement procedures.
Always disconnect power and safely discharge the capacitor before performing any inspection or maintenance.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
If your HVAC unit or motor is not functioning correctly, a failing capacitor is a common culprit. Here are some troubleshooting steps:
- Motor Hums but Doesn't Start: This is a classic symptom of a failed start winding or run capacitor. The motor attempts to start but lacks the necessary phase shift to initiate rotation.
- Fan Not Spinning: If the outdoor unit's fan motor is not spinning, but the compressor is running (or attempting to), the fan section of the dual run capacitor may have failed.
- Reduced Efficiency: An aging or weakened capacitor may lead to reduced motor efficiency, causing higher energy consumption and less effective cooling/heating.
- Physical Damage: Visually inspect the capacitor for bulging, leaks, or burn marks. Any of these signs indicate a failed capacitor that requires immediate replacement.
If you suspect a capacitor failure, always disconnect power and safely discharge the capacitor before inspection or replacement. If you are uncomfortable performing these steps, consult a qualified technician.
