Sysly 1747-UIC Interface Converter

USB to DH485, RS485, RS232 Programming Cable

Introduction

The Sysly 1747-UIC is a high-quality replacement interface converter designed to facilitate communication between a computer's USB port and Allen Bradley Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and other devices. This converter supports DH485, RS485, and RS232 communication protocols, enabling programming and data transfer for compatible Allen Bradley SLCs and PLCs, including models 500, 5/01, 5/02, and 5/03. It is important to note that this device is for DH485 communication and is not compatible with DH+ (Data Highway Plus) networks.

Package Contents

  • 1 x CD-ROM (containing drivers and software)

Features

  • Direct replacement for Allen Bradley 1747-UIC.
  • Supports DH-485 over RS-485 and RS-232 communication.
  • USB interface for connection to a computer.
  • Compatible with Allen Bradley SLCs and PLCs 500, 5/01, 5/02, 5/03.

Setup Instructions

  1. Driver Installation: Insert the provided CD-ROM into your computer's drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the necessary drivers for the 1747-UIC converter. If your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive, drivers may be available for download from the manufacturer's support website.
  2. Connect to Computer: Plug the USB end of the 1747-UIC cable into an available USB port on your computer. The operating system should detect the new hardware and complete the driver installation.
  3. Connect to PLC:
    • For DH485 communication, connect the RJ45 connector of the 1747-UIC to the DH485 port on your Allen Bradley PLC.
    • For RS232 communication, connect the DB9 connector of the 1747-UIC to the RS232 port on your Allen Bradley PLC.
  4. Select Communication Mode: The 1747-UIC converter features a switch (labeled 'SW' or similar) to select between RS485 and RS232 modes. Ensure this switch is set to the correct mode corresponding to your PLC's communication port.

Operating Instructions

  1. Verify Driver Installation: After connecting the converter, open your computer's Device Manager. Under 'Ports (COM & LPT)', you should see a new COM port listed for the USB Serial Port. Note the assigned COM port number.
  2. Configure RSLinx Classic:
    • Open RSLinx Classic software.
    • Go to 'Communications' > 'Configure Drivers'.
    • Add a new driver. Select the appropriate driver type, such as 'RS-232 DF1 Devices' or 'DH485' depending on your PLC and the mode selected on the converter.
    • Configure the driver settings, selecting the COM port number identified in Device Manager. Ensure baud rate, parity, data bits, and stop bits match your PLC's communication settings.
    • Click 'Auto-Configure' if available, or manually set parameters.
  3. Establish Communication: Once the driver is configured in RSLinx, you should be able to browse for your PLC in the RSLinx 'RSWho' utility. A successful connection will display your PLC in the network browser.
  4. Programming Software: Open your Allen Bradley programming software (e.g., RSLogix 500). Select the configured RSLinx driver to go online with your PLC, download programs, or monitor status.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and reliable operation of your Sysly 1747-UIC converter, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Keep the converter and cables clean and free from dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.
  • Store the converter in a dry, cool place when not in use.
  • Do not bend or crimp the cables excessively, as this can damage internal wiring.
  • Ensure all connections are secure before operation to prevent intermittent communication issues.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Converter not recognized by computer.Missing or incorrect drivers; faulty USB port; loose connection.Reinstall drivers from the CD-ROM. Try a different USB port on your computer. Ensure the USB cable is securely connected.
Cannot connect to PLC.Incorrect COM port selected; RSLinx driver misconfiguration; incorrect mode selected on converter; PLC not powered or faulty.Verify the correct COM port in Device Manager and RSLinx. Check RSLinx driver settings (baud rate, parity, etc.). Ensure the RS485/RS232 switch on the converter is in the correct position. Confirm PLC is powered on and functioning.
Intermittent communication.Loose cable connections; electrical noise; damaged cable.Ensure all cable connections are tight. Minimize sources of electrical interference. Inspect the cable for any visible damage.
RS232 connection fails.Converter switch set to RS485; incorrect cable for RS232.Ensure the converter's mode switch is set to RS232. Verify the DB9 connector is properly attached to the PLC's RS232 port.
