3. Setup
3.1 Unpacking and Placement
- Open the transit case (CC30) and carefully remove the FSM-80S splicer unit.
- Place the splicer on a stable, level surface, ensuring adequate ventilation. The transit case can be used as a workstation.
- Ensure the work area is clean and free from dust or debris, which can affect splicing quality.
3.2 Battery Installation and Charging
- Insert the BTR-09 battery pack into the designated compartment on the splicer.
- Connect the AC Adapter (ADC-18) to the splicer and a power outlet using the AC Cord (ACC-14).
- Allow the battery to fully charge before initial use. A full charge provides approximately 110 splices/shrinks.
3.3 Electrode Installation
Refer to the quick reference guide or video instruction manual for detailed steps on installing the ELCT2-20A spare electrodes. Proper installation is crucial for optimal splicing performance.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Powering On and Initial Checks
- Press the power button to turn on the FSM-80S.
- The splicer will perform a self-diagnostic check. Ensure no error messages are displayed.
- Verify the battery level on the display.
4.2 Fiber Preparation
- Using the fiber cleaver (CT-06), prepare the fiber ends according to standard procedures, ensuring a clean, perpendicular cleave.
- Clean the cleaved fiber ends with isopropyl alcohol from the dispenser and a lint-free wipe.
4.3 Splicing Procedure
- Open the wind protector and place the prepared fibers into the V-grooves, ensuring they are properly seated.
- Close the wind protector. The splicer will automatically initiate the splicing process.
- The FSM-80S performs fiber core alignment and then executes the fusion splice.
- Upon splice completion (approximately 7 seconds), the wind protector will open automatically.
- Carefully remove the spliced fiber.
4.4 Heat Shrink Protection
- Slide a splice protection sleeve over the spliced area.
- Place the fiber with the sleeve into the auto-start clamshell design tube heater.
- The heater will apply heat to both sides of the sleeve, shrinking it to protect the splice. Heating time is approximately 14 seconds.
- Once complete, carefully remove the protected splice.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
- V-Grooves and Electrodes: Regularly clean the V-grooves and electrode tips using a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Dust and fiber debris can significantly impact splice quality.
- Optical System: Keep the optical system lenses clean. Use a specialized lens cleaning solution and cloth if necessary. Avoid touching the lenses directly.
- General Casing: Wipe the exterior of the splicer with a soft, damp cloth.
5.2 Electrode Replacement
Electrodes have a limited lifespan. Replace them when the splicer indicates or when splice quality degrades. Refer to the video instruction manual for the correct replacement procedure using the ELCT2-20A spare electrodes.
5.3 Battery Care
- Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently to prolong its lifespan.
- Use only the specified Fujikura charger and battery pack.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| High splice loss | Dirty V-grooves or electrodes, worn electrodes, poor fiber cleave, incorrect splice parameters. | Clean V-grooves and electrodes. Replace electrodes if worn. Re-cleave fibers. Check and adjust splice settings. |
| Splicer does not power on | Discharged battery, faulty AC adapter/cord, battery not properly installed. | Charge battery. Check AC adapter and cord connections. Reinstall battery. |
| Wind protector not closing/opening automatically | Obstruction, mechanical issue. | Check for obstructions. If problem persists, contact support. |
| Tube heater not shrinking sleeve | Sleeve not positioned correctly, heater malfunction. | Ensure sleeve is centered. Contact support if heater is faulty. |
For issues not listed above or if solutions do not resolve the problem, please refer to the detailed video instruction manual or contact Fujikura technical support.
