Introduction to Libby
Libby is a free application developed by OverDrive that allows you to borrow ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines from your local public library. All you need is a valid library card. Libby simplifies the process of accessing digital content, making it easy to read or listen on your preferred device.
Setup: Getting Started with Libby
Download the Libby App
The Libby app is available for various devices. Download it from your device's app store:
- iOS Devices: Search for "Libby, by OverDrive" in the Apple App Store.
- Android Devices: Search for "Libby, by OverDrive" in the Google Play Store.
- Amazon Fire Tablets: Search for "Libby, by OverDrive" in the Amazon Appstore.
Once found, tap "Install" or "Get" to download and install the app.
Find Your Library
Upon opening Libby for the first time, you will be prompted to find your library. You can:
- Search for your library by name or city.
- Allow Libby to detect your location to suggest nearby libraries.
Select your library from the list.
Add Your Library Card
After selecting your library, you will need to add your library card. Enter your library card number and PIN/password when prompted. If you do not have a PIN or password, or have forgotten it, please contact your local library for assistance.
Operating: Using the Libby App
Browsing and Searching
The main screen displays your library's collection. You can:
- Browse: Explore curated lists, subjects, and new arrivals.
- Search: Use the search bar to find specific titles, authors, or series.
- Filter: Apply filters to narrow down results by format (ebook, audiobook), availability, audience, and more.
Borrowing Titles
When you find a title you want, tap on its cover. If available, tap "Borrow" to check it out. If the title is currently checked out, you can place a hold. You will be notified when your hold becomes available.
Reading and Listening
Once borrowed, titles appear on your "Shelf".
- Ebooks: Tap "Open In Libby" to read directly in the app, or "Read With Kindle" to send it to your Kindle device or Kindle app.
- Audiobooks: Tap "Open In Libby" to listen directly in the app. You can adjust playback speed, set sleep timers, and skip forward/backward.
Managing Loans and Holds
Your "Shelf" also allows you to manage your borrowed titles and holds:
- Renew: If no one is waiting, you may be able to renew a title before it expires.
- Return Early: You can return titles early to free up your borrowing limit.
- Manage Holds: View your position in the hold queue, suspend a hold, or cancel a hold.
Syncing Across Devices
Libby automatically syncs your reading progress across devices when you use the same library card. This allows you to pick up where you left off, whether on your phone, tablet, or another device.
Maintenance: Optimizing Your Libby Experience
Keep the App Updated
Regularly check for and install updates for the Libby app from your device's app store. Updates often include new features, performance improvements, and bug fixes.
Manage Downloads
Downloaded titles consume storage space on your device. Once you finish a title, consider returning it early to remove the download and free up space.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Playback Errors (Audiobooks)
If you experience issues with audiobook playback, try the following:
- Ensure you have a stable internet connection if streaming.
- Try downloading the audiobook for offline listening.
- Restart the Libby app.
- Clear the app's cache (if your device allows).
Kindle Integration Issues
If you are having difficulty sending books to Kindle or returning them early from Kindle:
- Ensure your Amazon account is linked correctly within Libby.
- Verify your Kindle device or app is connected to the internet.
- Sometimes, a slight delay occurs. Check your Kindle library after a few minutes.
- For persistent issues, try unlinking and relinking your Amazon account in Libby settings.
App Crashing or Freezing
If the app is not responding or frequently crashing:
- Close the app completely and reopen it.
- Restart your device.
- Ensure your device's operating system is up to date.
- Reinstall the Libby app (note: this will require re-adding your library card).
Cannot Find My Library or Card Not Working
Double-check the spelling of your library's name. If your card is not recognized, ensure it is active and not expired. Contact your local library directly for issues related to your library card or account.
