4. Setup
4.1. Assembly
Your lawn mower may require some assembly before first use. Follow these steps:
- Handlebar Assembly: Unfold the handlebar and secure it in the operating position using the quick-release levers. Adjust the height to your comfort level.
- Grass Bag Attachment: Assemble the grass bag frame and fabric, then hook it onto the rear of the mower.
- Mulching Plug/Side Deflector: Depending on your desired operation, insert the mulching plug into the rear discharge opening or attach the side discharge deflector to the side opening.
4.2. Fuel and Oil
IMPORTANT: The engine is shipped without oil. Add oil before starting the engine.
- Engine Oil: Fill the engine with appropriate 4-stroke engine oil (e.g., SAE 30 or 10W-30) to the 'Full' mark on the dipstick. Refer to the engine manual for exact specifications and capacity.
- Fuel: Fill the fuel tank with fresh, unleaded gasoline (minimum 87 octane). Do not use E85 fuel.
4.3. Cutting Height Adjustment
The cutting height can be adjusted using the semi-centralized levers on each axle. There are 6 positions available, ranging from 28 mm to 92 mm.
- Ensure the engine is off and the spark plug wire is disconnected.
- Pull the height adjustment lever outwards and move it to the desired position.
- Ensure all wheels are set to the same height for an even cut.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Starting the Engine
- Ensure the fuel tank is filled and the oil level is correct.
- Push the primer bulb (if equipped) 3-5 times until fuel is visible.
- Hold the operator presence control bar against the handle.
- Pull the starter cord with a brisk, continuous motion until the engine starts.
5.2. Engaging Self-Propel
Once the engine is running, engage the self-propel lever (usually located on the handlebar) to activate the drive wheels. Release the lever to disengage self-propel.
5.3. Mowing Techniques
- Bagging: Attach the grass bag. This collects clippings for disposal.
- Mulching: Insert the mulching plug. This finely chops grass clippings and returns them to the lawn as natural fertilizer.
- Side Discharge: Attach the side discharge deflector. This disperses clippings to the side, useful for taller grass where mulching or bagging is not ideal.
- For best results, avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade length at a time.
5.4. Stopping the Engine
Release the operator presence control bar to stop the engine. The blade will stop rotating within a few seconds.
6. Maintenance
WARNING: Always turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance or cleaning.
6.1. Cleaning
- Clean the underside of the cutting deck after each use to prevent grass buildup.
- Wipe down the exterior of the mower with a damp cloth. Do not use a pressure washer directly on the engine or electrical components.
6.2. Blade Care
- Inspect the blade regularly for sharpness and damage. A dull blade tears grass, leading to an unhealthy lawn.
- Sharpen or replace the blade as needed. Always use genuine MTD replacement parts.
6.3. Engine Maintenance
Refer to the separate Briggs & Stratton engine manual for detailed maintenance schedules. General tasks include:
- Oil Change: Change engine oil after the first 5 hours of operation, then every 25-50 hours or annually.
- Air Filter: Clean or replace the air filter regularly, especially in dusty conditions.
- Spark Plug: Inspect and clean or replace the spark plug annually.
6.4. Storage
Before storing the mower for an extended period:
- Clean the mower thoroughly.
- Drain the fuel or add a fuel stabilizer.
- Change the engine oil.
- Remove the spark plug and pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder, then slowly pull the starter cord a few times to distribute the oil. Reinstall the spark plug.
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated area. The foldable handlebar allows for compact storage.
7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine won't start | No fuel, old fuel, no oil, spark plug issue, operator presence bar not held | Check fuel level, use fresh fuel, check oil level, inspect spark plug, hold operator presence bar firmly |
| Uneven cut | Dull blade, uneven wheel height, excessive speed | Sharpen/replace blade, ensure all wheels are at same height, reduce mowing speed |
| Excessive vibration | Bent blade, loose blade bolt, debris under deck | Inspect blade for damage, tighten blade bolt, clean underside of deck |
| Mower loses power | Clogged air filter, low fuel, engine overheating | Clean/replace air filter, refuel, allow engine to cool |
