Setup and Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is critical for the adhesion and performance of VHT FlameProof Coating.

1. Clean the Surface: The surface must be completely free of oil, grease, rust, dirt, and loose paint. Use a degreaser or wax and grease remover. For new parts, ensure all manufacturing oils are removed.
2. Remove Rust: For rusted surfaces, use a wire brush, sandpaper, or a rust remover to achieve a clean, bare metal surface.
3. Sand (Optional): For optimal adhesion on smooth surfaces, lightly sand with 320-400 grit sandpaper.
4. Wipe Down: After cleaning and sanding, wipe the surface with a clean, lint-free cloth and a suitable solvent (e.g., rubbing alcohol or paint prep solvent) to remove any residue. Allow to dry completely.
5. Masking: Mask off any areas not intended for painting using painter's tape and masking paper.
6. Ventilation: Ensure the work area is well-ventilated.
7. Shake Can: Shake the aerosol can vigorously for at least one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Continue to shake occasionally during application.

Operating and Application Instructions

Apply VHT FlameProof Coating in light, even coats for best results.

1. Test Spray: Before applying to the actual surface, test spray on a piece of scrap material to check spray pattern and color.
2. Application Distance: Hold the can 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) from the surface.
3. Apply Light Coats: Apply several light coats rather than one heavy coat. This helps prevent runs and ensures even coverage.
4. Drying Time Between Coats: Allow 10 minutes of drying time between coats.
5. Total Coats: Apply 3-4 light coats for optimal coverage and durability.
6. Invert Can: After each use, invert the can and spray for a few seconds to clear the nozzle.

Curing Process

VHT FlameProof Coating requires a specific curing process to achieve its maximum heat resistance and hardness. This can be done on the vehicle or in an oven.

On-Vehicle Curing:

1. Allow paint to air dry for at least 1 hour before starting the engine.
2. Idle: Run engine at idle for 10 minutes.
3. 1500-2000 RPM: Run engine at 1500-2000 RPM for 20 minutes.
4. Normal Operation: Run engine under normal operating conditions for 30 minutes.

Note: During the curing process, some smoke and odor may be emitted. Ensure adequate ventilation.

Off-Vehicle (Oven) Curing:

1. Allow paint to air dry for at least 1 hour.
2. Bake at 250°F (121°C) for 30 minutes.
3. Bake at 400°F (204°C) for 30 minutes.
4. Bake at 600°F (316°C) for 30 minutes.

Maintenance

Once properly cured, VHT FlameProof Coating is durable and requires minimal maintenance. Clean the painted surface with mild soap and water as needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that could damage the finish.
