3. Setup

3.1. Initial Tuning

Your ukulele will require tuning before its first use and periodically thereafter. New nylon strings tend to stretch, so frequent tuning will be necessary during the initial days of playing.

  1. Attach the digital clip-on tuner to the headstock of your ukulele.
  2. Pluck each string individually. The standard tuning for a tenor ukulele is G-C-E-A (from top to bottom string when held).
  3. Adjust the tuning pegs until the tuner indicates the correct pitch for each string.

3.2. Attaching the Strap

The included strap can be attached to the strap buttons on your ukulele for comfortable playing while standing or for added security.

  1. Locate the strap buttons on the bottom of the ukulele body and near the neck joint.
  2. Securely attach each end of the strap to a strap button.

4. Operating Your Ukulele

4.1. Holding the Ukulele

Hold the ukulele against your body, with the back resting against your chest or stomach. Support the neck with your left hand (if right-handed) and use your right hand for strumming or picking over the soundhole.

4.2. Playing Techniques

The tenor ukulele's longer scale and more frets compared to a concert ukulele can offer more space for finger placement, potentially making it easier for beginners to learn chords and melodies.

  • Strumming: Use your thumb or a pick to strum across all four strings. Experiment with different rhythms and patterns.
  • Fingerpicking: Use individual fingers to pluck specific strings, creating melodies or arpeggios.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Cleaning

Regularly wipe down your ukulele with the provided cleaning cloth to remove dust, fingerprints, and oils. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the wood finish.

5.2. String Care

Nylon strings will naturally stretch and may require replacement over time. Use the included spare strings or high-quality replacements when needed. Refer to online resources or a professional for guidance on changing ukulele strings.

5.3. Storage

Store your ukulele in its included gig bag when not in use to protect it from dust, scratches, and environmental changes. Avoid extreme temperatures and humidity, which can affect the wood.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1. Ukulele Not Staying in Tune

New nylon strings require a break-in period. They will stretch significantly during the first few days or weeks of playing. Tune your ukulele frequently during this period. If the issue persists after the break-in period, ensure the strings are properly seated in the tuning pegs and bridge.

6.2. Buzzing Strings

String buzzing can be caused by several factors:

  • Incorrect finger placement when fretting notes.
  • Low string action (strings too close to the fretboard).
  • Worn frets.

Ensure proper technique. If the problem continues, professional adjustment may be required.
