1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation of your Somikon Super 8 and 8mm Film Scanner (Model NX4294-944). 2. Safety Instructions

The scanner features an integrated 2.4-inch TFT LCD screen for direct viewing and menu navigation. It supports both Super 8 and 8mm film types, with a switch for selection. The rear panel includes ports for TV output, mini USB for PC connection, an SD/SDHC card slot (up to 32GB), and the DC 12V power input.

5. Setup

5.1 Power Connection

1. Connect the provided power adapter to the DC 12V input port on the rear of the scanner.
2. Plug the power adapter into a suitable 230V wall outlet.

5.2 SD Card Insertion

1. Ensure the scanner is powered off.
2. Insert an SD or SDHC card (up to 32GB) into the SD card slot on the rear panel until it clicks into place.
3. The scanner records directly to this card, eliminating the need for a PC during scanning.

5.3 Film Loading

The scanner supports film reels up to 7 inches (17.8 cm) in diameter.

1. Place your film reel onto the supply spindle and an empty take-up reel onto the take-up spindle.
2. Adjust the film type switch (8mm Film / Super 8 Film) located below the film path to match your film. Use the included 8/13mm adapter if necessary.
3. Carefully thread the film through the film path, ensuring it passes correctly through the scanning gate and around all guide pins.
4. Attach the film leader to the take-up reel.
5. Ensure film splices are clean and secure to prevent transport issues.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Powering On and Menu Navigation

1. Press the Power button to turn on the scanner. The integrated 2.4-inch TFT LCD screen will display the main menu.
2. Use the navigation buttons (Up, Down, Enter) to browse through menu options such as 'Playback', 'Fast Rewind', 'Exposure', 'Language', 'USB', and 'Format'.

6.2 Scanning Film

The scanner operates in a fully automatic mode for digitizing films.

1. From the main menu, select the 'Scan' or 'Record' option (exact wording may vary based on firmware).
2. The scanner will begin to automatically feed the film and digitize it. The scanning resolution is 1440 x 1080 pixels at 30 frames per second.
3. The device features automatic exposure and white balance. Manual exposure correction is possible from -2.0 to +2.0 EV via the menu.
4. Scanning will automatically stop at the end of the film reel.
5. The digitized video is saved as an MP4 file on the inserted SD/SDHC card. Audio tracks are not recorded.

6.3 Playback and Rewind

1. To view scanned films, select 'Playback' from the main menu.
2. To rewind a film, select 'Fast Rewind'. Rewinding a 10-minute film typically takes about 2 minutes.
3. You can connect the scanner to a TV using the provided video cable for direct playback (PAL/NTSC output).

6.4 Transferring Files to PC

1. Connect the scanner to your computer using the supplied mini USB to USB cable.
2. The scanner will appear as a removable storage device.
3. Drag and drop the MP4 files from the SD card to your computer.
4. The scanner supports Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1/10 and macOS / OS X from 10.7.3.

7. Maintenance

Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and image quality.

• Cleaning the Film Path: Before and after each scanning session, use a can of compressed air to remove dust from the film path, especially the scanning gate (white square at the bottom) and the lens (at the top). Dust can significantly degrade image quality.
• Exterior Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the scanner with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
• Film Condition: Ensure your film reels are clean and free of debris before scanning. Dirty films can scratch the scanner's components and reduce image quality.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1 Film Transport Issues (Jumping Image, Stalling)

• Cause: Old or poorly made film splices, heavy film reels, or dust in the film path.
• Solution:
  • Inspect film splices. If they are weak or sticky, re-splice them.
  • Clean the film path thoroughly with compressed air.
  • For very heavy reels, consider manually loosening the film on the supply reel to reduce tension on the transport mechanism. Some users find it helpful to let the film run into a box instead of using the take-up reel, then manually re-spool it later.
  • If the film stalls at a splice, manually advance the film past the splice and restart scanning, then combine the video segments later on a computer.

8.2 Poor Image Quality (Dust, Flickering, Exposure)

• Cause: Dust on the lens or backlight, incorrect exposure settings, or inherent film quality.
• Solution:
  • Clean the lens and backlight with compressed air before each scan.
  • Adjust the exposure settings manually via the scanner's menu if automatic exposure is not satisfactory.
  • For optimal results, post-processing of the digitized MP4 files on a computer using video editing software is recommended to adjust sharpness, contrast, color, and remove graininess.

8.3 Scanner Not Powering On

• Cause: Power adapter not connected correctly, faulty outlet, or power adapter issue.
• Solution:
  • Ensure the power adapter is securely connected to both the scanner and a working wall outlet.
  • Try a different power outlet.
  • If the issue persists, contact customer support.
