Buildalot Carbon Brushes for Flex WS 702 VEA Sander

Instruction Manual

1. Product Overview

These Buildalot carbon brushes are designed as direct replacements for the Flex WS 702 VEA Sander. Carbon brushes are essential components in electric motors, facilitating the transfer of electrical current to the rotating armature. Regular replacement ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your tool.

Each package contains two carbon brushes, complete with springs, cables, and connectors, ready for installation. The dimensions of these brushes are 6.3x6.3x10.6 mm (0.25x0.25x0.42 inches).

2. Installation (Setup)

Proper installation of carbon brushes is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of your Flex WS 702 VEA Sander. Always ensure the tool is disconnected from the power supply before beginning any maintenance.

  1. Disconnect Power: Unplug the sander from the electrical outlet to prevent accidental startup.
  2. Locate Brush Caps: Identify the brush caps on the motor housing of your Flex WS 702 VEA Sander. These are typically small, screw-in caps, often located on opposite sides of the motor.
  3. Remove Old Brushes: Carefully unscrew the brush caps. The old carbon brushes, along with their springs, will be accessible. Gently pull them out. Note their orientation if possible, though new brushes are typically symmetrical in their housing.
  4. Inspect Commutator: While the brushes are out, inspect the commutator (the copper segments on the motor's armature). It should be clean and smooth. If it's excessively grooved or dirty, professional servicing may be required.
  5. Insert New Brushes: Insert the new Buildalot carbon brushes into the brush holders. Ensure the carbon block slides smoothly into the holder and the spring applies even pressure. The connector should align with the tool's internal terminals.
  6. Secure Brush Caps: Carefully screw the brush caps back into place. Do not overtighten, but ensure they are snug to maintain proper brush contact.
  7. Replace Both Brushes: It is recommended to replace both carbon brushes at the same time, even if only one appears worn. This ensures balanced performance and prevents premature wear on the new brush.
  8. Test Operation: Reconnect the sander to the power supply. Briefly run the tool to ensure proper operation. Initial sparking is normal as the new brushes seat themselves, but excessive or prolonged sparking may indicate an issue.

3. Operation and Function

Carbon brushes are critical components in universal motors, commonly found in power tools like the Flex WS 702 VEA Sander. Their primary function is to conduct electricity from the stationary part of the motor (stator) to the rotating part (armature) via the commutator.

As the motor operates, the carbon brushes are in constant contact with the spinning commutator. The carbon material, being relatively soft, wears down over time. This wear is a normal part of their function, allowing for continuous electrical contact while minimizing damage to the harder commutator segments. The spring mechanism ensures consistent pressure is applied to the brush, maintaining reliable contact as the brush shortens.

4. Maintenance and Replacement

Carbon brushes are consumable parts and require periodic inspection and replacement. The lifespan of brushes depends on the tool's usage intensity and operating conditions. These Buildalot replacement brushes are designed for extended durability.

Signs of Worn Carbon Brushes:

  • Reduced Power or Intermittent Operation: The tool may lose power, run inconsistently, or stop working entirely.
  • Excessive Sparking: Visible sparks emanating from the motor housing, particularly around the brush caps, can indicate worn brushes or a dirty commutator.
  • Burning Smell: A distinct burning odor from the motor can be a sign of brushes wearing down or other motor issues.
  • Motor Not Starting: If the motor fails to start, especially after a period of heavy use, worn brushes are a common culprit.

Upon noticing any of these signs, inspect your carbon brushes. If they are worn down to approximately one-quarter of their original length, or if the spring no longer applies adequate pressure, it is time for replacement. Always replace both brushes simultaneously for balanced performance.

5. Troubleshooting

If your Flex WS 702 VEA Sander is experiencing issues after carbon brush replacement, consider the following:

  • Tool Not Starting:
    • Ensure the tool is properly plugged in and the power outlet is functional.
    • Verify that the new brushes are correctly seated and the brush caps are securely tightened.
    • Check if the brush springs are applying adequate pressure to the brushes.
  • Excessive Sparking:
    • New brushes may spark slightly as they "seat" to the commutator. This should reduce after a few minutes of operation.
    • If sparking persists or is very intense, ensure the brushes are fully inserted and the commutator is clean. A dirty or damaged commutator can cause excessive sparking.
  • Reduced Power or Unusual Noise:
    • Confirm that both brushes are making good contact with the commutator.
    • Ensure no debris is obstructing the motor's ventilation.
    • If issues persist, the problem might be beyond the carbon brushes and could involve other motor components, requiring professional inspection.
