Taylor 2715 2-in-1 Rain Gauge and Sprinkler Gauge Instruction Manual

Model: 2715

Introduction

The Taylor 2715 2-in-1 Rain Gauge and Sprinkler Gauge is designed to accurately measure precipitation and sprinkler output. This tool assists in maintaining healthy landscapes by providing precise water measurement data. It features a dual-purpose design, allowing for both rain and sprinkler monitoring.

Product Features

Setup Instructions

  1. Unpack the Gauge: Carefully remove the rain gauge and sprinkler gauge components from the packaging.
  2. Choose a Location: Select an open area free from obstructions like trees, buildings, or overhangs that could block rain or sprinkler water. For accurate rain measurement, ensure the gauge is not under a roofline or dense foliage. For sprinkler measurement, place it within the sprinkler's coverage area.
  3. Mounting Options:
    • Ground Installation: The gauge can be inserted directly into the ground using its pointed base. Ensure it is firmly planted to prevent tipping.
    • Post Mounting: The gauge can also be mounted to a post or fence using appropriate hardware (not included).
  4. Ensure Level Placement: For precise readings, it is crucial that the gauge is perfectly level. An unlevel gauge will provide inaccurate measurements.

Operating Instructions

  1. Rainfall Measurement: Place the larger 5-inch capacity gauge in your desired location. After rainfall, read the water level directly from the scale marked in inches and centimeters.
  2. Sprinkler Measurement: The smaller 1-inch capacity gauge can be used separately to measure sprinkler output. Place it within the area you wish to monitor.
  3. 2-in-1 Functionality: For combined use, the smaller sprinkler gauge can be nested into the bottom of the larger rain gauge tube. This allows for monitoring precipitation in two locations or using the smaller gauge for quick checks.
  4. Reading the Scale: Read the measurement at the bottom of the meniscus (the curved surface of the water). The gauge provides clear markings for easy reading.

Maintenance

Watering Guidelines

Understanding how much water your plants and lawn need, combined with accurate rainfall measurement, can optimize your watering schedule and conserve water.

Vegetables

Most gardens require about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) of water per week, including rainfall. The exact amount depends on factors like soil type, plant type, and climate. Vegetable gardens typically need 1 to 2 inches per week, especially during hot weather.

Flowers

Flowering plants generally require about 1 inch of water per week.

Grassy Yards

Grass typically needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. Deep and infrequent watering (once or twice a week rather than daily) encourages deep root growth. Early morning watering (between 4 AM and 10 AM) is recommended to reduce evaporation and fungal growth.

Soil Type Considerations

Different soil types retain water differently, influencing watering frequency.

Sandy Soil

Sandy soil drains quickly, requiring more frequent watering. For sandy soil gardens, consider watering approximately 0.5 inches twice a week. For sandy soil grass, water 0.5 inches every 3-4 days.

Clay Soil

Clay soil holds water longer, so deep but less frequent watering is best. For clay soil gardens, water deeply when the top few inches are dry. For clay soil grass, water 1-1.5 inches once per week.
