4. Setup
Before operating your Tumble-Bee Rock Tumbler, perform the following setup steps:
- Placement: Place the tumbler on a firm, level surface in a room temperature environment, ensuring adequate ventilation as described in the Safety Information section.
- Belt Adjustment: The drive belt that connects the motor to the rotating rod may require adjustment. Carefully remove the housing (typically a couple of screws) and ensure the belt is properly seated on the gears. Hand-tighten the motor in place using the adjustment screws to achieve proper belt tension. The belt should be snug but not overly tight.
- Oiling: Apply a small amount of the provided lightweight oil to the four bearings where the rods spin. This lubrication is crucial for smooth operation and longevity. Repeat this step before each weekly tumbling cycle.

5. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps for effective tumbling:
- Find your Location: As mentioned in setup, choose a convenient location with an electrical outlet nearby and proper ventilation.
- Open the Barrel: Unscrew the barrel nut counterclockwise. Remove the outer lid, then insert the Allen wrench between the outer lid and the barrel, moving the wrench in an up-and-down motion to remove the washer.
- Add Your Material: Fill the barrel with 1/2 (minimum) to 2/3 (maximum) of the stones, glass, or metals you wish to polish. Add clean water just enough to barely cover the top layer of your material. (Tumbling material is not included).
- Add Your Abrasive: The type and quantity of abrasive depend on the material being tumbled. Refer to the tables below for guidance. (Abrasives are not included and can be purchased separately).
- Close the Barrel: Wipe the inner lid of the barrel clean with a damp cloth. Place the inner lid back in the barrel for a snug fit. Place the outer lid on top of the inner lid so the center bolt is sticking out. Place the washer on top and screw on the barrel nut clockwise until very tight. Manually spin the barrel to check for leaks.
- Time to Tumble: Plug in your Tumble-Bee and turn on the power switch. The barrel should begin rotating. If it does not, manually spin the barrel to initiate rotation. It is normal for the tumbler to make noise during operation. Follow the abrasive manufacturer's directions for specific tumbling times.
- Changing the Abrasive: Open the barrel and pour your tumbling material into a bucket or strainer. Rinse the material with clean water. Inspect the material; rough edges should start to wear down, and a polish should begin to appear with each step. Place the inspected material back in the barrel with the correct abrasive for the next stage.

6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Tumble-Bee Rock Tumbler:
- Barrel Cleaning: After each tumbling cycle, thoroughly clean the inside of the barrel and its lids to remove all abrasive residue. This prevents cross-contamination between grit stages and ensures a proper seal.
- Oiling: Re-apply lightweight oil to the four bearings where the rods spin before starting each new weekly tumbling cycle. This reduces friction and wear.
- Belt Inspection: Periodically check the drive belt for wear, cracks, or slippage. Ensure it remains properly tensioned. Adjust or replace if necessary.
- Visual Checks: Perform a daily visual check to ensure the barrel is tumbling at the expected speed and that both rods are spinning freely.
7. Troubleshooting
Here are solutions to common issues you might encounter:
- Tumbler Not Rotating:
- Check if the power cord is securely plugged in and the power switch is on.
- Verify the drive belt is properly seated and tensioned. Adjust if loose.
- If the motor feels hot, the thermal overload protector may have activated. Unplug the unit and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes before restarting.
- Manually spin the barrel to help initiate rotation if it's sluggish.
- Barrel Leaking:
- Ensure the barrel nut is tightened securely.
- Check that the inner and outer lids are clean and properly seated, with no grit or debris preventing a seal.
- Inspect the barrel and lids for any damage or cracks.
- Excessive Noise:
- Ensure the bearings are adequately oiled.
- Check for any foreign objects caught in the moving parts.
- Verify the tumbler is on a stable, level surface.
- Motor Stops Unexpectedly:
- This is often due to the thermal overload protector. Allow the unit to cool down. Ensure proper ventilation around the motor.
- Check for excessive load in the barrel.
